Having the villain just be preparing the heros for a showdown against the real villain was fine in VLR because it was promised to be part two of three, ZTD is supposed to be the final instalment, so pulling the same shit again doesn't work because we'll never actually see that showdown.
Also, in VLR Brother's existence was discussed thoroughly throughout the entire story, in ZTD the terrorist is only so much as hinted at in the finale.

In addition, you need an actual stimulus to shift, you need to have your life being threatened or some serious danger going on around you. This was a big deal in VLR and was made out to be a big deal in ZTD as well, specifically in Junpei and Carlos's SHIFT Adventure Happy Time which is kicked off by Akane just randomly nuking the entire facility in one timeline and killing everyone else.

They then end up having their life threatened, act as human shields for Akane despite their bodies not being very good at blocking machine guns, and she hops timelines right after that despite not being in any danger at all. Uchikoshi has grown more and more incapable of sticking to his own rules and making a satisfying story. Consistency is far more important than shock value.

I've been replaying ZTD and it's insane how hard you get bullshitted out of interesting outcomes, far worse than any damn brat. Interesting timelines just aren't allowed to go anywhere.

When C Team gets executed,Q Team have to decide whether or not to shoot up with Radical-6. If you don't shoot up you get the D1 VLR ending, but if you do? Mira just fucking kills Q Team and then D Team.

When Diana accidentally shoots Sigma and then suicides, we don't even get to see Phi's reaction, for fuck's sake. The timeline just ends there.

Am I the only one who liked the game?

I mean its story is as goofy as 999 or VLR, but I thought it concluded and wrapped up the story nicely.

That said, I do admit that I can't remember every little detail of every branch so maybe I just don't remember the more glaring lol wut moments of logical consistency

I swear, ZTD has been one of the biggest disappointments in my life.
The worst thing about it is that I'm still hoping for a Q&A that will explain the fuckery and I'm probably going to play that PSYNC game he's working on, like a battered wife.

If there was a timeline where they survived and everything worked out ok how come they didn't just SHIFT to that one from the beginning?
