Very first time I did this fight I think for some reason I made Ramza a white mage or some shit. That was horrible.

Came back to the game years later and Ramza was a monk. Wiegraf had no idea what he was getting himself into.

>Very first time I did this fight I think for some reason I made Ramza a white mage or some shit. That was horrible.

You can get good damage out of white staffs since they go via magic damage. You can bonk people pretty hard with staffs since they go via magic power for damage. Holy can one shot Wiegraf.

>make game about grey morality
>just makes you work for the mustache-twirling villain instead

If Algus was a good character he would have made a convincing practical argument as to why classism exists. Instead we got HURR DURR I'M BETTER THAN YOU and Ramza looks like a massive asshole.
>>
>>375983670
I was actually kinda pissed when Algus when off the deep end with his rant. Made me realize the whole story would end up being filled with such assholes.
>>
>>375983670

Algus perfectly makes sense. His family lost its status as nobels because of his relatives betrayl. Which is why he's so hardcore about this shit. Nobility is the only thing that makes him better than everyone else. They have no fortune or anything. He has to redeem himself in the eyes of the political establishment by being a nice little lackey and killing some Death Corpse.

He's a contrast to Ramza.
>>

Delita is the only thing grey
Everyone else Ramza meets is pretty clearly black and white.

Game's clearly doing a marxist perspective on class struggle; and certainly Argath knows what he says is absolute truth, since the political and economical context (and personal story) leads him to do so. To be clear, he was born with a subset of ideas and models to achieve and to glorify, and is a bitter cunt to those who are not enjoying themselves under the umbrella of that privilege.

In all seriousness, just being able to attack in distance and run somewhere safe is enough. Teleport is just 600JP, Aurablast is something like 300JP, Chakra another 300JP, Shockwave 500JP. Then you have the squire abilities, like Focus, which is a god send and Tailwind, which is only 300JP.

That is pretty much achievable without grind if you play your cards well and get JP Boost in the first couple of battles.

Guilty of this way back when I played it for the first time in the 90's. I always had 3 saves when playing (because saves still got corrupted before) - on the save point before that though I knew something epic was about to unfold, so I saved on all those 3 goddamn slots - and it was during a time when i had no idea what classes i need to assign to my people.

I don't remember much about the story, but it's not like Algus was the only representative of the status quo. Wasn't the whole point that the Beoulves were righteous but there were lots of other shitbag nobles (starting with Algus) that made them look bad? It wasn't his job to be the voice of reason against Wiegraf, because in the end Ramza had his own reasons to put him down even if Algus was a shithead.

>>
>>375989678
>Wasn't the whole point that the Beoulves were righteous

Ehhhhhhhhhh
>>
>>375989678

The point was that Balbanes was righteous and only Ramza and Alma took up this mantle. This is ironic since they're both illegitimate, and the legitimate kids are jerks. Dycegard is straight up evil, and Zalbag falls in the middle.

Ramza grew up idolizing his father, and thought he was the status quo instead of the exception. His disillusionment after Zalbag orders Teta to be killed leads to him abandoning his family. Delita and Teta had been part of the family since they were children.

Interesting that Ramza never calls Zalbag out on that order. Algus gets the blame. Or that Zalbag never questions that the team led by Algus turned up dead.
>>
>>375989576
There's blocking and abilities that reduce damage, though.
>>
>>375989743

The stones appear able to communicate to other planes of reality, be it demonic or angelic.

There's also no confirmation as to whether there's any kind of God or anything in Ivalice. All we see are demons and the religion turns out to be mistakenly worshipping the Anti-Christ.

>Righteous

Dycedarg is a shithead and a puppeteer, Zalbaag just doesn't want to think much. The only righteousness we see is of their father's legend in another war that fucked up the commonfolk, as the first chapter strains. The glorification seen throughout the game of the 50 years' war is just because the War of the Lions is either too damn shitty or Ramza is too young.
>>
>>375990154

>>375989946
It makes sense that Zalbag wouldn't question that, the Fort exploded and Algus' team had been assigned to go in and wipe out the remaining rebels hiding in the fort. The fight outside between Algus and Ramza+Delita was just a small skirmish Zalbag probably didn't even know about it and just assumed that that team had been wiped out.

The XCOM remake fixed this issue entire by making the healing/revival item have a limited amount of charges.

I can see how you think that, but the game's difficulty curve isn't typical. Chapter 1 is the hardest, and has one of the worst difficulty spikes, Dorter Slums.

The game gets significantly easier through Chapter 2 and 3, even without grinding for JP or unlocking classes. So long as you get over the Chapter 1 hump, it won't feel grindy at all.

Magic frenzy Seer Illusionists dual wielding books has to be one of the funniest game breaking combos ever devised. I was a big fan of Chocobo Knights too, remember the Brown and White Chocobos being pretty decent for supporting.
>>
>>375995847
Actually, my question was shitty

>>
>>375995891
Shit, I never even thought of dual books. I thought it only worked for melee weapons.
>>
>>375995934

WOTL isn't much of an improvement, it's really just a port. Either is fine
>>
>>375995936
Yeah I never tried it for the same reason but somebody told me about it. Seer magic frenzy makes them perform a normal attack on any enemy they hit with a spell. Illusionist magic hits the whole field for low damage. So the Illusionist magic hits everyone and then the Seer who has two books equipped teleports to every enemy on the map via magic frenzy and whaps them on the head with two books.
>>
>>375995828
The translation is better (except for two really good lines in the original), but the port is shitty. Get patches or patch the PSX game with the translation.

>>375995828
The only downsides to WotL are:
nerfed magic. They increased the timer on magic because n00bs kept getting raped in Dorter or some shit. Now there's little reason to use it when Sword Skills are better.
bad audio. No, the lightning bolts aren't supposed to sound like beeps.
And that's basically it. Meliadoul's sword skills now do damage to enemies that don't have gear in the corresponding slot, so she's not just waifu material anymore. You still get Orlandu first, though.

>>
>>375996328
The original translation is fine, there are some Engrish-y moments like Ramza yelling 'don't open that!' at a guy who is going to use a magic demon stone, but that intent and meaning are generally quite clear. From what I can tell the WOTL translation (haven't played it myself) is generally more accurate, but also up its own ass with period appropriate dialogue. An example I found from Googling:

Original:
>Gaffgarion: I'm being more than kind to the guard captains here. Besides, we're mercenaries hired by the Hokuten. I'm not obliged to show respect to you.

WOTL:
>Gaffgarion (raising his head): A guard captain in these rain-sodden hinterlands ought not expect chivalry. We are in the employ of the Order, not of it. Our pay does not cover trite courtesies to the likes of you.

I dunno, I've never really liked when fantasy fiction tries to replicate Shakespearean dialogue, or whatever you want to call it - rather than putting me into the time period they're trying to evoke, it takes me out, since I can immediately picture the thought process that went into writing each over-wrought line.

But I'm not a scholar of language or a fancy published writer, so that is definitely just my opinion, no more valid than people that like it.

When it comes to WOTL specifically though, I would probably never be able to give it a fair shake as I've practically memorized the original dialogue, the only thing I can damn near objectively say is shitty is the removal of iconic lines like 'Blame yourself or God.' and 'Animals have no god!' to fit the new insistence on flowery dialogue.

HOW TO GRIND UP SAFELY ON FFT 101:
labeled characters A, B, C, D, E... whichever they are.
Phase 1: Grab your five guys and get them to learn Earthslash and Chakra (monk) as soon as possible.
Phase 2: Focus on a maximum of 3 characters at a time by pushing them into other jobs. You're going to need the remaining 2 to defend and heal and even slow down and cripple the enemy. I recommend the latter 2 to equip the knight's skillset for this. Characters A, B and C should have squire's skillset and you can have them using "Accumulate" infinite number of times. But don't let Characters D and E lag behind in base level, you want them to all stay within a small range so that the next random battle won't give you 5 level 20 guys against your 3 level 20s and 2 level 10s. After each battle, keep switching who gets to try a new job, always making sure the characters that focus on crippling the enemy have the knight skill as secondary.

>Not really.

https://www.gamefaqs.com/ps/197339-final-fantasy-tactics/faqs/13954

Full battle list. 19 areas have random battles, with 1 rare battle and 4 battles per entrance. Most areas have 2 entrances, but a couple have 3, so let's go with 2.2 entrances to be safe, so that's 9.8 variations for the 19 areas. Rounding up that's about 190 battles.

19 battles have majority humans on the enemy team, and that's being generous and giving it to the humans when it's an even 50/50 split. 19 out of 190 is a mere 10%, which is even LOWER than my guess of 20%.

So fuck off knave. Gear scaling doesn't matter at all for random battles. The game is categorically made easier by grinding, especially since human players tend to select good skills and the AI is always stuck with shit ones (again, outside of Earth Slash town with the 12 monks).

>Why exactly is someone that cares about wasting time playing a video game in the first place?

Games have win and loss conditions. A trivial win is a pointless exercise, much like beating a 7 year old at tic-tac-toe. If you're not being challenged (or learning something), you're pretty much wasting your time.

>Do you even know how random numbers work?

Do you? There are a hundred story battles in the game. Let's be generous and say you figured out how to baby it out and grind at the 10th battle, so there are 90 left.

If you bothered to read the guide it says that random battles occur ~50% of the time you step on the green node. So that's .5 * .1 each time you step on a node to get into a battle with humans, assuming you enter each node roughly equally in all directions. 5% chance now per entry.

If you think that number comes anywhere CLOSE to 90 battles, you're delusional. The net effect of grinding is making the game easier. You haven't even addressed how thieves can steal your precious super-human equipment for yourself, or how the AI spends its JP on retarded abilities (compared to a human player). Or how the AI doesn't frequently equip Item command, which puts the human player at a distinct advantage, even when the human enemies have much better equipment. Or how you don't run into T.G. Cid or Agrias as random enemies, but the human player gets them.

The claim that grinding makes the game overall harder is a joke. Stop your madness, you look absolutely foolish.

Abilities have a much higher impact than levels. You'll have enough spillover JP that it's not much trouble at all.

Game is already easy even without grinding, so all you did was waste your time. Good job.

Yeah I did. You just haven't been reading.

>Yeah if you spend all day playing whiffle ball with 7 year olds, you're not going to be challenged. That's basically what grind-retards do.
That's basically not the case at all. In fact, spending all day playing actively with children is something both more productive and difficult than the average video game, including this one in it's entirety.

>If you knew anything about learning a language, you'd know how much gamification has gone on with flash card apps, Anki, and other stuff. Go figure, they turn it into a game. A challenging one. Where you have to learn skills in order to pass an arbitrary win or loss.
Gamification? What exactly does the ancient studying practice of quizzing have to do with games? I seriously hope you're not trying to imply there's any kind of productivity in vidya by associating the two.

Atleast tactics ogre gave you the OPTION to fight one on one or bring your party when it came to this shit so as to not fuck over certain playstyles.

If you didn't 1v1 him though you're a fgt.

There are many, many mistranslations. While I still think you can get the gist of what's being said with the PS1 translation, I wouldn't recommend anyone use it. The PSP version is written extremely well, but I personally dislike a lot of the name changes (which is just a nostalgia thing) and they can sometimes go pretty overboard with the vocabulary that no one knows. I've only found like 2 errors in the PSP translation (which is very good).
Here's a sample of how bad the PS1 version's translation can be: https://boards.fireden.net/vg/thread/175391853/#175425641
The best way to play it at the moment is to patch the PSP translation into the PS1 version of the game. The extra content is not worth the PSP version's shitty music and sound effects.
>>
>>375997804
I dont understand the question. Its almost like you think there is a reason she shouldn't, but obviously that is absurd
>>
>>375997316
>>375996328

The PS1 translation is great in some ways, rushed in others. The extra features, like tutorial, bar missions, were so rushed they were gibberish. But the main storyline is fine.

It's a Japanese FFT LP on niconico where the guy gave each white mage a different color portrait and edited in dialogue for a comedy run. If I remember the rules right, it was
>no grinding on purpose (all random battles skipped/save stated over to not occur), no purposeful actions in the story battles to grind XP/JP either
>4 white mages, one with Equip Lance and Jump 5x5, one with Equip Axe + all Squire skills, one with Equip Sword + knight skills, one with monk skills.
>Ramza is also a white mage, but he can only equip crossbows and use white magic
>Each character can cast Holy once per game (in the entire playthrough, not per battle)
>all equipment that can't be bought from normal stores must be sold, no equipping anything you can't buy from shops normally

Would have been a bit better if he went for Jump 3 instead of 5 though, the lancer was OP. Funny skits, though.

I want to do a rebalance mod of FFT since I'm dissatisfied with the ones now.

>not super hard (some battles harder, some easier)

Nice idea? I don't know. I'm afraid it'll get too fanficy if I change the special jobs around. A lot of them are just boring repeats of Holy Knight or are pretty lame (Malak and Rafa).

>>375983670

The fact that Algus had an inane personality and was heavily biased towards wanting to be better than the rest as an overcompensation of his shame doesn't make him a "bad character"; there are other character availble for intellectual exchanges along the road, his storyline is simply being a massive entitled cunt you are lead to believe to be a pitiable soul, but instead turns out to be just as much of a fuckup as the grandfather he hates so much.

It should also be noted I have no idea where you gathered the "grey morality" part. Delita and to an extent the twins can be marked as that, the rest is literally a goddess of bloodbaths wanting bloodbaths ASAP and a bunch of dudes willing to get her just that, and you wanting to stop that while having to fight clearly evil, greedy fuckups fighting for the throne.
The moralities are pretty straightforward.
