The goal early game is to avoid using SP as much as you can and to try to clear the dungeon in one go. SP management becomes much easier once you get Tae up to a certain rank when she sells the SP accessories.
On Hard this is doable with strategy and stealth. Merciless requires you to save often and be wary of crits because you WILL die to them. Crits and weaknesses will also have you unable to get Personas most of the time because they won't survive to negotiate with in the first place. This can also work in your favor as critting your way to victory becomes a very real thing you can do against any bosses.
Yeah Archangel midboss is one of the casual filters. Having someone with Tarunda will help.

You ARE aware you can change the difficulty at any time right? You will get locked into Safety if you try. It's a trap you really shouldn't fall for.

Nah, lots of people cleared their first run on hard (including myself). You'll find yourself strapped for sp in early dungeons before you get the death arcana confidant at rank 7 which will then allow you to buy SP restoring equipment at 50k yen which makes it far easier to go through dungeons in one day. You'll also be shitting out sp restoring items once you max out the temperance arcana and get hierophant to a decent rank because you'll be calling your maid over every night for free to make them while you do more important stuff.
