Neopets was already coasting from a high when Viacom bought it. Its real death has been a slow one (think about it, it's a 90s browser game) that slowly died as the web at large moved on to more involved games on the PC end and as they failed to properly adapt to mobile (e.g. the retarded mobile bid that you had to subscribe to on dumb phones right before/after the iPhone came out.)

Jumpstart has since had it on total life support, but not without justification. The playerbase isn't expanding, the game is simply continuing to exist.

The last time I had fun with this was the constellations event thing I got a sidebar theme from.

Yep, no new plots for years now.

They still manage to keep updating the cash store with new clothing (that peope would rather have unconverted pets than be able to wear anyway). It's a glorified whale hunt now and will continue to be one until it gets turned off in a few years.

you don't pay anything to play it, and every action has to interact with their servers so they've gotta have costs compared to usage...
is it just a free service and they license their IP for beanie babies or something?

Pets with the old custom-per-paint artwork were largely replaced with cookie cutter art per species so they could sell pet clothing they could drag and drop on. If you had a pet painted an existing color that was deemed to be a drastic shift, it was grandfathered into being "unconverted" otherwise it was "converted" to its new artwork.

Any pet painted after that point in...fuck, what, 2007? 2008?... was on the new, inferior artwork.

Obviously as a result unconverted pets are the rarest commodity in the game, especially since many of them have been nuked from the game from inactivity.

Pets used to have different and unique poses, which was a big part of what made rarer paintbrushes exciting. In order to introduce clothing, they made it so that all pets of a species had the same pose so you can play KiSS dolls with them.
