Fucking Swap against Ex was horrible.
I was trying my hardest, which meant I beat him before I even got a fraction of the points I needed.
So eventually I just stacked puyos randomly and hoped for chains, which somehow gave me enough points after barely not dying to him.
But that's done with, finally.

20th was a lot better than 15th overall, but 15th Satan is still my favorite final boss in the series. If you set the game to hard mode your pieces just teleport to the floor and Satan plays like a hardcore mode ai to make matters worse. It's super satisfying to beat.

Puyo/Tetris and PdP aren't similar in the slightest. There's no way to balance the games, trust me.

The PdP player could INSTANTLY harass a puyo/tet player with combos, then work their way up with chains. A puyo/tet player wouldn't outlast a PdP player based on how safe PdP is. Chain off your garbage and you'll never die. Shit like that is why PdP VS matches last for absolutely forever.

Just keep practicing setups. Set one up, execute, and restart. Soon you'll start to recognize the basics behind a t-spin. Having Tsu as a game mode isn't what should make 7 good though, because every Puyo game has a Tsu mode. Tsu is the core game evolved to the peak it needs to be at without adding anything unnecessary. It's a direct upgrade over the first game, and while some people might enjoy the changes that Sun made, there are some who don't prefer it, leaving Tsu to still have value. Fever was a new fresh take on Puyo and is probably the closest the series can get to having character differences without doing anything ridiculous like yon did. Granted, there are still some who prefer Tsu, so it has a rightful place to stick around as its own mode. 7 on the other hand, is just Fever but significantly easier to sustain invincibility and as such, matches drag on for significantly longer while offering nothing that Fever didn't already. There's no reason to play 7 as an objective gamemode when Fever's an option.

I'm new to this series, what's the main difference between Puyo Puyo and Magical Drop? Is the second one just a rip-off or are there enough differences in the mechanics and meta game like with Street Fighter and King of Fighters that would make both different enough?

Perfect Clears. They send 11 lines of garbage.
They're OP compared to Puyo's All Clears because at least those require actual effort to put into the attack AFTER you clear your board. With Tetris, it's just an instant Fuck You button.
Worse still, there's a pattern that makes a Perfect Clear at the start of the fucking match 7 times out of 10, which means that if you can pull it off nicely, you can fuck over anyone in less than 5 seconds.
