Fuck those discs
>>

I thought these were so neat when they came out.

It's like they were designed to make you buy games digitally off the PSN store instead

>>

fun fact: i bought the s[iderman 2 movie on umd like 6 months before i got my parents to get me a psp. i still have it, with a few other movies, like elf and the punisher since my gamestop wouldnt accept movies when i traded it all in. i wish i hadnt. my psp was my first porn device and vice city stories might be my favorite gta. simpler times.
>>
>>375964951
I think the idea was they were going to release portable media players that used them, like those UMD movies would had been playable on dedicated video devices.
>>
>>375963046
more like only 00's kids won't support me

why is it that a 90's kid like me supported the PSP and a 00's kid just cried?

How did the fuck up with PSP GO so badly? The PSP was fucking amazing.

Altoid's sour tins were nice and could fit in like 3 UMDs in them if I remember right, but carrying around a PSP and something for UMDs takes much more space than just worrying about a PSP.

>>
Launching a disk like 5 feet at someone made for the best feature of the PSP
>>
>>375966752
Blu-Ray was a pretty hollow victory
>>
>>375964762
You're forgetting how expensive flash memory was at the time. Telling people they had to buy a 1 GB memory stick (or SD card) that could hold a few games at once, or 1 large game, and they had to erase it and download a new copy of the game everytime they wanted to play another one, would have been ridiculous. Look at how much flak they got when they tried this with the Vita's memory cards.

Sony saw how sticking with cartridges instead of discs hurt the N64 against the Playstation, and didn't want to limit their games to the size of what the DS could have. It may have turned out to be a bad decision to go with discs on a mobile gaming device, but it wasn't without merit.

Don't even fucking remember why I did that shit, but I did. Maybe it was the most efficient at the time? Been too long.

I remember being amused I was playing fan-translated patches of a Japanese game on a hacked Japanese console loaded from a Chinese memory stick.
>>
My own problem with UMDs was transporting them

How does that even happen?
>>
>>375967324
It was patched in later, it wasn't on my PSP at first. You were able to "buy" comic issues from the PSN store, I think it was mostly Marvel titles. It's not a generic eBook / eComic reader, so you couldn't view your own files on your memory card with it. It got shut down years ago, and I think you aren't even able to redownload old stuff you bought.

PSP was the last handheld I owned, and I bricked it trying to hack the frameware. Well, technically I bricked my friends and had to give him mine which was hacked. Good times though, playing GBA games on psp was always a lot of fun.

I think the game you had to use was lumines 2? Shit game but it cost so much because it was the best way to hack it.

>>
>>375967253
Average game size was much smaller though, especially in 2004-2006. Even the larger games that fill the disc really aren't that large, they're padded with dummy data. They can be trimmed and compressed and still uncompressed much faster than loading from a disc. Within a couple years DS had 256MB carts and eventually 512MB carts (megabytes too, not megabits).

PSP games could have gotten by with carts just fine and had better load times and longer battery life. Videos would have needed tighter compression and and compression in general would need to be used but it would have been fine
>>
>>375973246
correct, but comparing a relatively obscure peripheral with a selling point is somewhat dishonest

Replacement umd cases were shitty looking but very helpful. Half the time the trade-ins would have cracked cases or have the entire clear plastic piece pushed in, preventing it from playing. They were so cheaply made.

I think the funniest thing I've seen with the PSP was a guy trying to return one of the MGS spin-offs.

They were very goddamn cheap. Even with gentle use the case will start to split the UMD casing apart on the side. The only other thing I've seen like this would be 360 discs. I don't know what it was with those but it wasn't uncommon to see them with cracks forming in the center from constant removal from their case as well. You'd see cracks sometimes on other platforms at the time (PS3, Wii) but not at the rate of the 360.

PSP hardware was so cozy. I didn't even mind the shitty analog nub. It needed two though.

The PSP community was cozy overall though. All those videos of custom led light setups guys would use to pimp their console. The cfw community, at least on YouTube, was pretty chill and helpful. TolstoyKafkaEvesky video reviews.

It's a shame the library of games didn't age all that well. Going back to it today, only the RPGs hold merit. The western games are mostly shitty compromised versions of games you can probably emulate on your PC these days. But I'll always appreciate how cool the thing was in it's time.
>>
>>375982297
Yeah, despite having vastly inferior hardware I feel like there are way more good DS games that have aged well.

umd is the worst format of all
so glad all my PSP games are on microSD now
wish the PSP wasn't so poorly made -- I'll be on my sixth if I get another (first was a beat-up ass hand-me-down from a friend, second fell and died, returned my third because it came with a faulty d-pad, the fourth developed hideous screen issues, and my current one randomly doesn't want to turn on for no apparent reason despite a charged battery)
and all of them except the one I returned developed issues with the analog stick

haven't had to deal with getting multiple of any other handheld anything ever, it's not like I don't generally take care of my shit

I gave my 1000 to my older brother because he was moving from here in CA to NY, and he had enjoyed playing it before. So I got a Go and repurchased some games before cracking it.

Then the Vita gets announced and it's a new, different, still tiny, but expensive memory type.
>>

Vita hardware and software outsells those of 3ds in the east
>>
>>375984169
Launch PSPs were so simple to CFW it was laughable. Throw an exe on your memory stick and launch it, boom, you're done. There was no security then.
After about 50 different firmware versions, some semblance of security was getting implemented. And of course the newer generation PSP you had the harder it was compared to the previous version.

It was cool seeing PSP homebrew take off. It's what turned a small niche community into... well a bigger niche.

Google and a translation says:
"According to some sources of information a Sony technician after repairing a PSP forgot to remove the battery and a memory stick that contained all the data needed to unlock the PSP and sent the PSP to its owner with surprise. From what is thought the battery accesses the flash through a connection pins (I think it's called that) and the battery needs the screen so that it can interact with the flash since the PSP is briked."

So it's like Pandora Battery+ I guess

>>375967464
Those nubs were pretty weak to begin with. Anything that relied heavily on using them in a circular motion a lot like the God of War games is enough to atleast wear them out. The way they were placed in the PSP was also another issue because it was just one big hole that lead right into the PSP's circuits or whatever with nothing protecting it which made it super easy for dust, hair, or grime to build up down there fucking up your nub's alignment and sensitivity(controls in game moving on its own).

Question for 20 year olds of /v/: do you associate your childhood more closely with stuff of 2000-2006 like Cartoon Cartoons, Yu gi oh, PS2, Avatar TLA, Gorillaz, Discman, Malcolm in the middle, Cyberchase, Tamagotchi, Osmosis Jones, original Ben 10, and Kim Possible?
