Was gonna post this. Read a guide on how the weapons are supposed to be used. I was extremely turned off by the game the first time I played, the a few months later I tried it again after reading an image guide in the MH generals then it clicked.

I like using wide gunlance, made set with guard+2, guard boost, awakening and artillery god with 3-slot Empire. Stab for para, shoot for damage.

Your right. I am a Souls fanatic and my muscle memory is all wrong. I just can't get over the fact that the lock-on doesn't work as it should and you really have to aim your hits properly.

Dodging is good too, but it is more about positioning than spamming roll or running. Think of the game as a turn-based game: first the monsters do their moves, and then you make use of their cooldown time to be more aggressive. Study their patterns and don't expect perfection or get greedy: it's about the hunt, not a hack and slash.

That is a good way to go about it, although I would recommend doing the weapon training quests for every weapon before deciding which one you feel more comfortable with.
