General fixes from what I remember, I don't think I ever got magic to work more than 1 in 50 tries before using Libertatis. No reason not to use it if you're thinking of playing the game.

How similar is Arx Fatalis to Ultima Underworld really? Should I play Arx Fatalis first to try and ease myself into Ultima Underworld?

Very similar, also longer/larger and more NPC interaction. Arx is a good place to start but you'll probably still have a hard time making the transition. Maybe try System Shock 1?
