The Vita is old. Its age is really starting to show. And yes the same can no doubt be said about the 3DS. But the thing is, the biggest reason for why the Vita have most of its exclusives, is because it's a more powerful system than the 3DS. With said games simply not being feasible on the 3DS.

And the Switch is stronger than the Vita. It's happening again.
The 3DS is the most successful handheld. That's why the vast majority of all handheld games, that do not need power, end up on the 3DS. All while the games that do need power ends up on the Vita.
And the majority of games that need that power, they want that power. Unlike the 3DS games. And so moving to the Switch, which has more of that power, is a very desirable proposition.

MS still has a lot to prove. Their 1st and even 3rd party support has been extremely poor this generation and they've yet to really give any indication of turning that around. Having the most powerful platform won't do much for them without a library to showcase it.

Despite the Switch's success, the software landscape for it going forward is almost completely barren, and it's still a wholly incomplete, immature platform. Nintendo has a lot of work to do in those areas, on top of apparently continuing to support the 3DS.

Compared to them, I think Sony has it relatively easy.

There was never a reason for the developer support the Vita had to move to any other system. So the idea of it dying because of that was always silly.

But that was also ages ago. And now there is better hardware on the market. Expectations have shifted. And there are now other platforms available that can fulfil the same niche the Vita did, and incentives to move.

So it's not the same situation like years ago at all. The 3DS is dying too by the way. Even if Nintendo just recently announced a new model. It'll stay around for maybe a couple of years but it's without doubt on its way out. Just like the Vita.

Handhelds are moving forward. Sony needs to release a Vita 2 if they want to stay in the handheld market.

My outlandish prediction is Sony teases the PS5.

I know there's lots of reasons to say that's crazy; the PS4 is selling so well, the Pro only came out last year etc. but here's my theory;

The PS4 came out in 2013. If the PS5 didn't come out until 2018 then that makes the generation 5 years long. That's actually pretty typical for a console generation. People just forget that because the previous one went on for so long (mostly due to the global recession). 2018 also puts a 2 year gap between the Pro and PS5. That might not seem like much but the Pro has only really been marketed to hardcore gamers who need the latest tech. Those people would be OK with refreshing their hardware within that time frame.

The other reason why I think Sony would tease the PS5 is because it would completely blow whatever Microsoft show off with Scorpio out of the fucking water. Who's going to be interested in souped-up current gen hardware when the next gen is starting the next year? All Sony need to do at the end of their conference is cut to a video similar to the Scorpio reveal (camera panning over CPU components), then BAM! A "5" appears in the Playstation font. End conference. Sony don't need to officially talk about it or reveal anything until next year's E3 but just having that out there would completely take the wind out of Microsoft's sails.
