Thing is unless the game is an rpg that lasts for 30+ hours, there's not enough time to set up characters in any other way than the way that makes it obvious who's gonna stab you in the back.
Not that many long games aren't written like shit as well, but sometimes the reason for subpar writing is BECAUSE it's a video game. A novelization by the same author could actually be good.
