If you ask me, it's a perfectly reasonable weapon. It makes the other classes aside from the big power classes more important. Spies can actually do something other than manipulate hitboxes and lag by either sapping or stabbing the campy bastard. Scouts can pick off a carrying engie quickly and easily for a twofor.
A proper uber that involves the whole team pushing and not the the medic + powerclass combo is a force to be reckoned with, and if skillfully executed defeats the RR strategy easily. Minicrits while carrying equipment is a killer downside.
Without the rescue ranger, every uber push would be a guaranteed sentry kill every time.

That, plus destroying even one of them brings them both back down to lvl 1, and by their very nature they're far away. An engineer that's set up a foward position and loses his teles has to make the decision between trekking all the way back to spawn and getting his shit sapped or just letting the team hoof it. It's a tough decision.

And idiot teammates have no respect for the ettiquette at all and will blindly lead the enemy right to them. A lot of engies are autistic about scouts pushing a med off a tele, but it doesn't really matter if the team isn't dying that much and you've got level 3s up. I'm autistic about people taking them then using the room they're in as some sort of psuedo-spawn room to poke their heads out of or play rock paper scizzors in. Or taking them and not knowing the map well enough and getting lost.

Upgrade your sapper by only one point and then if you don't have a scout upgrade

It's good to get a few points of health regen too since you won't be getting many direct kills with your knife.

What you want to do is just keep your DR up, grab money, and save your sapper for big groups of dangerous enemies. DON'T STAB THEM. When giants come along stab once (or twice if you have max firing speed) and then pull out your DR and run for cover. You need to be out of sight of the giant or cloaked before redisguising or he will just keep shooting you.
