HHD already had villagers taking up positions in the facilities in town, though it was just for flavor. I had Bluebear in charge of the cafe, and Walker as a lazy teacher.

I'd love to see them return, villagers in and out of your town having their own daily lives working at the facilities in your town, and the facilities having their own uses. Like, the school could be tutorial central so they can get away with just dropping you into an already developed town, the hotel could be like a more expanded form of the campground, a restaurant where different dishes might give you little boosts like faster running speeds or more luck finding rare fish or bugs, the hospital to deal with bee stings or bring sick villagers to, stuff like that.

Some people forget that randomness is part of AC's charm. Not knowing what items are for sale, which villagers will live in your village and where, when they will move out, etc. it's all part of that.

I agree, and that's why I don't like the mayor gimmick. I'd rather see the town develop in that way on its own, and being able to influence it, but not needing you to babysit it every step of the way. I'd like to see them do more to make it so the villagers have their own lives, too.

The devs, apparently, are primarily concerned with the home decor aspect of the series, so you can show off your perfect little houses to your friends online. They've stated in interviews most of the time spent on the games is on the furniture.
