Play release order and pretend everything after MGS4 didn't happen. PW isn't a bad game, but it enabled TPP.

Release order. Chronological reveals a lot of shit from other games that you should not know yet. Start with MGS, and maybe play MG and MG2:SS around MGS3 or so (MG2 is good, MG is way worse and feels like a slog). Legacy Collection is a good place to start with some of the better versions of each of the games.

Portable Ops is optional, but I don't think it is that bad. Don't play Metal Gear Rising until after MGS4, it has a lot of spoilers for the series in the game.

I'd argue that PW did what it could within the limitations of its hardware. A lot of the crappy parts of TPP (few codec calls, no locational damage, uncharacterized boss fights, moronic mission structure) were straight up ported over from PW without that excuse though, so I regard TPP as worse.

I'll be honest with you: MGS 2 is one of the most entrancing experiences you'll ever have with a video game the first time through on the basis of how strange the sum of it's parts mix together. But when every repeat experience is moving around cookie cutter modules for 5 minutes before another 20 minute cutscene that explains what you already know, that doesn't make for a good video game on the whole. If that makes any sense.
