They revealed 29 characters during the crowdfunding, but recently said that there would be only 25 playable and everyone else would be an NPC.

We have Ginseng and Honey who are playable but were NOT revealed in the campaign, so at least 5 of the revealed characters won't be playable. We don't know which ones yet, though.

I'd say a long and blatantly obvious red flash that is literally screaming 'BLOCK WITH THIS CHARACTER' is way more than enough to tell you who's about to be attacked, and when not disingenuously cut to mislead, even your webm would show that the time it takes for one to register the beginning of that red flash and the time it takes after that for the attack to actually happen is fucking more than enough to get your block going on the right character before the enemies attack is active.
On top of that, there are sound queues as well, and whats more, the game frames the screen in an orange glow when the enemies are about to use an action, specifically to convey to you that 'an enemy is about to attack, pay attention'
The prototype is plenty fucking fair about this, barring some intentional exceptions, like the cheap shot the normal boss will get you with when you start the fight that doesn't even do much.

And I think that's their plan. They had to whittle down the roster to 25, so less popular characters like Antoine and Kaldi were probably going to be cut, which would have left no rapier user and Narssus as the only black guy.

With that in mind, I think the new design is a better replacement for them anyway. That honestly makes it much easier for me to see the other guys turned to NPC's, or get overhauled in much different directions.

The original was a cohesive design, that looked cool, and communicated the cowboy/conquistador perfectly. The redesign communicates nothing, because it seems to be pulling from 9 completely different sources, to create something that looks messy and yet so much more dull than the original.
