It just doesn't seem to fit the character they originally built at all, he's not ferocious, he's not merciless, and if they were going for cowboy/conquistador, now he resembles neither. It seems like a horrible redesign for a character so cool I was sure I was going to keep him in my party.

I like the right more. Southern Gentleman/Beauregard meshes much better with conquistador themes than cowboy, and the pistol with a saber bayonet is a much more striking weapon than just a revolver rifle. That said, he seems like a shit gunslinger, strikes me more as a "duel for honor" kind of guy. I'd ask why he needs to be black, but I already know the answer's "muh diversity"
