The Shin Megami Tensei universe operates on a multiverse scale and this is factually canon. The Great will is actually the Axiom (Great Will and Axiom are just two names that can be used for it, YHVH refers to it as the great will), which is the reality of everything. YHVH was just a being that was created to work as a sort of avatar for Axiom and govern each universe respectively, before it became too self aware and started rigging the game. As far the fragments thing, that is a thing but it's fragment's of YHVH himself (guys like Demiurge spawning from his leftovers). The reason why YHVH keeps referring to himself as part of the great will or THE great will is due to 2 reasons. The first reason is that he's bullshitting to full everyone else that he truly is THE infinite being and that what they speak to is only a part of himself. The second reason is because YHVH is remaining intentionally ignorant of what the Axiom is and the infinite other YHVHs in the other universes. It's like how Demiurge remains intentionally ignorant of YHVH and all the angels following this other God as their leader, continuesly claiming that HE, Demiurge is the one true boundless God.

The main reason why you and so many other players are confused by what the Great Will actually is and YHVH's part in it is because the earlier games never went into full detail as to what we were dealing with, so we were only left to believe what YHVH said. Thanks to IVA and some other later games, we're given a full explanation on what they truly both are, and the truth is that YHVH is full of shit.

Ending the Axion would be the equivalent to waking up/Killing Azathoth. You'd just be be pulling the white on a multiverse scale. That doesn't solve anything because it's no different than having humanity drop nukes on each other until earth is inhabitable and they all die. I started with P3: FES, and it's a nice mix of alright writing, an interesting villain, and light difficulty, without requiring too much brainpower. Gives you an alright idea of demon fusion from other games, and helps you memorize spells and shit. If you wanna elsewhere, I recommend DDS, easily one of the best SMT stories, and not super difficult either. Just don't expect the buddy buddy shit from P3.
