That happened to me in dishonored. I don't care that the level design is a step above average and that the stealth tools are interesting. I just became hyper aware almost immediately how unrewarding it is on a gameplay level and just dropped it

Arkane games don't strike me as something good, played Dishonored and it was okay and filled with flaws, heard Dark Messiah was amazing but dropped quickly, couldn't shake how it felt like a Half-Life 2 mod with shit combat, Dishonored 2 runs like shit, and I don't give a fuck about their games anymore.

Before it's released and before anyone has played it in the wild without Bethesda looking over their shoulders? Anime art style, trailers/footage that looks like it's a generic corridor shooter, come to think of it that's the biggest one. And even that wouldn't make me think it's bad, it would just make me not give a shit. The primary reasons I'm on board are the developer and the fact that everything shown about the game makes it look like they're at least trying something.

To put it another way, I was completely put off by Doom until I saw some streams from people who got the game early and I was able to see some actual gameplay, and that impressed me enough despite being a generic shooter that I then preordered. A simple generic shooter being entertaining is a hell of a lot rarer for me than a shooter that's trying something different. I enjoyed fucking Eye and I sure as hell wouldn't call it a good game.

from someone who's played the game already with no expectations, i have to say i was disappointed because i was initially hopeful

the start of the game is pretty strong- wonky controls aside and barring any performance issues that might happen

the main issue i had is the game doesn't uphold any of its promises or good ideas

the game says you can play how you want, explore anywhere you want whenever you want to, ignoring the critical path, but there's little reward to do so. The game is so scared you won't understand its story that everyone is shoving the plot down your throat (see the story spoiler that was leaked above, it's pretty accurate). The NPCs aren't terribly interesting, although there are SOME fun emails here and there which gives some semblance of world building, but not enough.

that would be fine if the combat was good or it felt like you could really play the game in unique and meaningful ways, but it doesn't feel like that at all. the powers you can acquire don't have interesting utility like dishonored. you're going to be using guns 80% of the time, there's just no reason not to. the game also forces combat onto you, so you wanted that stealth run? fuck you, get locked in a room and fight this generic black monster. it feels like most replays of the game would be too similar to be worth it.

in short, it just feels like the game says "you have choice!", but you really don't, so i would highly advise people to at least hold off.

i was kinda thinking of doing a speedrun tomorrow once it officially releases because i really don't like how bethesda does business and it feels like they're "preying" (no pun intended) on hopeful consumers

i know because I've played the game. it's not that big. if you've played the demo, the lobby is physically big, sure, but the amount of traversable space vs what there is to do in said space is limited. locked rooms don't have anything in them except some emails and maybe some extra neuromods, big deal.
