Daggerfall's faction system is better and the directional attacks, while not making much realistic sense, at least have a gameplay purpose. There's no special days of the year or time limits or decaying reputation so the world feels comparatively static in Morrowind. Also no climbing so you can't do cool shit like >>375871679 or >>375872331.

Oblivion and Morrowind were the two ES games closest to a perfect balance of enjoyment and difficulty. Oblivion just had better gameplay and faction questlines than Morrowind.

Also I feel the need to add that there are some really good dungeons in Daggerfall, especially for the main quest. You'll spend most of your time in dungeons so it's more than minor praise to say that aspect is superior.

Yeah, but the thing that set Morrowind's dungeons apart was the hand-placed enemies and loot. Nothing like walking into a Daedric Shrine at level 5 and getting your shit pushed in, or using a few invisibility potions to grab the most valuable item in there and go.

Sometimes it was a generic enchanted sword, sometimes it was a cursed gem that spawned a dremora when you picked it up, sometimes it's a scroll that gives you 60 seconds invisibility and super high speed levitation, or a staff that recharges on its own and gives you two full minutes of slower flying on demand.

There's a lot of memorable moments to be had in Morrowind's dungeons compared to Oblivion's, since the latter simply fills everything with generic level scaled enemies and loot. Oblivion's traps were pretty cool though, at least the first few times you saw them.

You can recreate most of Arena's classes in Daggerfall. It's as restrictive or free as you want. Want to make a thief-type class that can't wear armor? Great, you'll get the experience bonus you got in Arena because of the armor disadvantages, not because of something intrinsic to the class.

As for passwall, that's a necessary loss since Daggerfall's dungeons have real 3D geometry and aren't just minecraft-style blocks that are easy to destroy and place.

Worse setting, worse combat, worse story, straddles the fucking middle ground of Morrowind and Skyrim with the benefits of neither, shitty ass Oblivion gates, shittier side quest stories, worse modding community.... etc.

In short: It's inferior in every way to either Skyrim or Morrowind, and is nothing compared to Daggerfall. By virtue of being worthless it is worse than the rest of the series, except Redguard, which is trash.

That's how Elder Scrolls has always been. Each game is a different genre if you have a tight definition of the word genre. It is just a product of whatever is popular at the time.

Daggerfall was a fully procedually generated 3D roguelike, because that was what was popular at the time.
Then morrowing was a hand crafted, walking simulator adventure game retaining DnD style dice roll combat, because that was what popular at the time.
Then Oblivion came out and was a graphically stunning visuals, open worlds, simplified combat, and procedually generated loot. Because that was what was popular at the time.
Then skyrim came out with its dynamic worlds, set pieces, crafting system, simple combat and light rpg elements, because that was what was popular at the time.

And guess what, the next ES game is going to be totally different from skyrims. And what is in vogue now?
Hand crafted worlds, dark souls style combat with parrying and dodging, survival mechanics, action adventure feel...
That's what the new ES is going to be, because they are all just a product of their times.

Don't bother with language skills. Any character works but the starter dungeon might be tough if you don't find or start with a weapon suited to your class. In this regard picking Short Blade even as a minor skill and getting the ebony dagger through the background questions can be a helpful crutch for your first character.

If you decide to play a mage make sure to get a magicka enhancing advantage, otherwise your maximum pool will be too small to cast anything at all, at least until you get some enchanted equipment to grow it.

Don't be afraid to run away from enemies (like the imp in the tutorial seen in >>375870986) that you can't handle yet.
