Zesty was really bad though. Waifu shit aside the story was bland and nonsensical, took massive detours to make one character look good at every opportunity, and was aimless and pointless for long stretches of time. There were a lot of technical issues too like the final boss graphical glitch, a shit-awful battle camera, and broken uninteresting combat.

Berseria is a distant prequel to Zetsy, and it stands on its own fairly well. You'll miss a few references to Zesty and some "so THAT'S why x is like it is in Zesty" moments, but other than that you can play it by itself.

If you only play as Velvet combat is a little too simple. Other characters bring greater variety. You can switch who you control on the fly too. Combat is always on a 3D plane so you can air-juggle, run around, and even get stuck on terrain. On harder difficulties if you try to face-tank everything or mash the wrong buttons you will probably die very quickly.

It's a disappointment and a downgrade overall but it's not worthless. There's a reason it's not counted as a Mothership title. You can get it for cheap and it's not a long game so if you want to try it, do it. Just don't expect the old cast to do anything important.

Zesty's in the future so if you play both you can appreciate the changes to the world, the origin of Zesty's problems, a lot of Zesty's lore that is never really explained in the game itself, and a few characters that show up in both games. Berseria has a few inconsequential nods to Zesty as well (some Normin talking about wanting to follow a silver-haired beauty who likes puns, for example).

The best games so far are Berseria (story, characters), Vesperia (characters, gameplay), Graces f (item system, skits, gameplay), Xillia 2 (suffering), and Phantasia (for-the-time gameplay, story).

Most people will tell you to start with Vesperia or Symphonia but they're not much like the games that Bamco has been putting out recently. They feel quite different.

A lot of people started with Symphonia and it's not bad, but I personally don't think it's worth all the praise it gets. Abyss is polarizing - most people seem to love it or hate it. Phantasia is a classic and an absolute must-play if you can stomach mid-90s JRPG conventions. If you do play it play the PSX version translated by Absolute Zero.

Zesty is bad. Xillia 1 is okay but not really outstanding.

CAVEAT FOR GRACES f: the story is shit, the characters by themselves are shit, and if you took a shot every time someone mentioned "protecting someone/thing important", you'd die very quickly. That said the skits are amazing and the combat is some of the most fun I've had with these games. Fuck the haters I loved the Eleth mixer.

They didn't even abandon PS3 with Berseria. I love Tales but even going as far back as Destiny Namco's Tales team couldn't do graphics as well as most would hope. Maybe with whatever they announce at TalesFes we'll finally leave PS2-era models and animations behind.

They've been doing a little better in the overworlds with the fields to explore. I can only hope that next they stop making bland series of corridors and swapping palettes every time they need to make a dungeon.
