Simple, by making sure the game has:

-great story and writing. Many players spend hundreds of hours playing games with well written stories.
-better and more memorable characters. Players spend a very long time playing games such as Dragon Age and Mass Effect. Why? Because they loved the characters they recruited and played with.
-better gameplay and more fun multiplayer. PvP is fine in Destiny, but it's nothing special. Bungie can do much better like what they did with Halo in the past. A well made multiplayer is fun and addictive.
-exploration. Players spent hundreds of hours exploring in games such as Skyrim and Fallout.

Destiny has none of the above.

Destiny 1 itemization is incredibly shallow, the """stats""" are just cool down reduction and strength is fucking worthless compared to faster grenades and supers.

I want a more indepth and thorough stay system and more meaningful gear variety, not to be using the same fucking guns for a decade.

I get to keep my character and emblems presumably, I'm fine with that. I don't need to be using Gjallarhorn for YET ANOTHER BORING ROCKET SPAM BOSSFIGHT.

If destiny 2 has bosses that aren't the exact same infinitely-spawning adds, instant kill ground stomp, shoot-when-vulnerable garbage with MAYBE a "stand here for 10 seconds" mechanic I will be absolutely shocked.

Destiny's raid bosses have less mechanics than a level 15 dungeon in Vanilla WoW a DECADE ago. It's completely unforgivable how lazy they are.

I want a crucible mode without supers and I want Primary TTK buffed enough that it's not a secondary meta shitshow ad nauseum. At least in the handcannon meta you had a choice between Thorn, Hawkmoon and TLW as well as secondaries, versus now it's just rifled barrel eyasluna when you run out of shotgun or sniper ammo.

Destiny has a cool setting and fun core gunplay shackled to the worst encounter design team I've ever seen

Because the missions in Destiny are no where near the level of quality of missions like The Silent Cartographer or The Covenant. I literally cannot remember a single Destiny mission except for the one in the Taken King where there's a huge fight between the Cabal and Hive with the Cabal using a tank and the Hive using a Troll.
The reason we replayed Halo over and over again was because it was fucking amazing and we wanted to play it again.
The reason we replay Destiny strikes/raids over and over again is so we can get a chance at getting the gun or the armour that we want.
It's not a reward, it's an incentive.

Halo rewards you by being fun, Destiny rewards you through gambling

Because destiny is not Halo, and Bungie clearly market the game as a evergrowing and expanding franchise. And no it is not a scapegoat to enjoy a game and support it's expansions, and then give back your thoughts and ideas on how the game could be better. Which is something that bungie DOES hear about and HAS implemented in the game. The problem is not that there is a grind, the problem is that there is little or no reason to do it, or have something else to do on the meantime.

I'd argue that's a lot to do with length. There's a lot of quiet moments in the Halo campaigns where you're moving between locations enjoying exposition.

Destiny's strikes on the other hand are like super condensed versions of Halo mission setpieces. Break them down mechanically and you see that Bungie's "30 seconds of fun" mentality is still there.

The story missions are definitely sub-par, but I still really enjoy the strikes and raids as much, if not more in some cases, than I enjoyed different landmarks in Halo's campaign like the first time you take down a Scarab in 3, or any of the Warthog runs.

It's just now there's also a drop you can get. It's just interesting to me that creating an incentive/reward/bonus for playing the game also creates this sense of "ugh do I have to" in some people.

f the new game is samey enough to make it feel like they're trying to invalidate your work with a pointless reboot, then you're not missing out on anything by not picking it up and instead opting to stick with your old character on the original game.

If the new game is different and novel enough that it DOES feel like you'd be missing out on a bunch of new and fun stuff, then it's different enough that starting over is justified and you should enjoy the journey back to the top again in much the same way you enjoyed the original.

Why do players spend so much time playing games they hate? Why are there negative Steam reviews from players who literally spent over a 1000 hours playing bad games?

I understood this when Destiny came out. It received nasty criticism which basically boils down to:

>no characters
>no exploration
>no great gameplay
>demands tons of grinding

Once players get the best items (or whatever item they desired)... they stop. Just like that... they stop playing.

Destiny is insanely overrated. It has no characters, no explorations, no story, no writing, no great gameplay, no choice and consequences, no interesting setting, etc. If it had these, then players would have fun and keep playing the game after the shitty grindfest.

Destiny only has a very manipulative loot system. It drags players like a gambling machine lures its victims. Which is why it gets so pointless and boring once you get the gear you want.

Looting was the only point of the first game. And now... Bungie confirmed that not even this mattered. So why the hell aren't people pissed off? Isn't this fraud?
