also making it an island is an easy way to cordon off the play area in a believable way. Far Cry Primal used mountain ranges instead.

FC 1, 3, and 4's plots were all predicated on an island vacation anyway so maybe FC5 or FC XIII will use sci-fi forcefields or ruined buildings or the eternal void of non-creation to cordon off the play area instead, depending on the demands of the plots of those future games

This thread reminds me about how underrated pic related is.

I mean, jesus fucking christ, the setting was beautiful, the soundtrack was perfect, the graphics have a very particular softness to them that still makes them pleasing to this day, even the whole idea of having two indisputably horrible factions clashing against each other, one which is basically /pol/-grade fashes and the other which is basically /leftypol/-grade tankies, feels like the perfect narrative setup for a military game set in central Africa,

But yeah, the writer had to try way too hard to imitate Hearts of Darkness instead of the developing his own narrative (funny enough, I read that he's now working on the actual Apocalypse Now game) and the enemies had to be fucking sponges, which sort of removes the whole desirability of an open world shooter in a conflict region where you're constantly getting into gun fights. It's still a solid experience but some writing and some gunplay improvements could have turned it from a good game into a memorable classic.

the enemies were not that bad. I think the issue is that they would wiggle around when shot, and pistols (and the MP5) were godawful. If you ran around with a proper rifle or shotgun, you were appropriately lethal.

It's always a manhunt on harder difficulties, with the man hunted being you. I have fond memories of sprinting through the jungle, bullets trailing above my head.

Trigen designs could be kind of goofy, but no quicksaves and how deadly they are makes them functionally terrifying. And those long jumps, oh god, when I first realized they can make that huge leap and kill me in 2-3 hits. And then you fight them in close quarters. Thank god for Jackhammer.
