it is very old and the community is loyal - and helpful. Easy mechanics but acquired taste.

I used to play games like that a lot.
The last one being Endless Online which never got out of beta and was filled with trash sadly.
How is the itemshop etc in Dark Ages, I remember looking it over but never bothered with it.
Is it worth getting into or am I just wasting my time?

5 class system - warrior/monk/priest/wizard/rogue
free to play until 99 (any thing is worth at least, checking out eh?)
heavy community based - world politics/events
if you become a registered member, you are awarded with free kruna (for itemshop)

How's the balancing between classes?

a hybrid, you start as one class and once you've hit level 99 - you can either Master as the class that you are or select and start at level 1 under a new class of your choosing. Thus keeping the skills you learned as the other one, and as well as an opportunity to grasp other tasks that are available to each class.

There are perks every path that a player might find more appealing than others - like pure skills compared to hybrid classes and so forth.

Also depends on what class you hybrid with - obvious builds are priest/wizard - for heavy magic users.
