Knights of the Old Republic

Loading screens make references to comic books about Exar Kun and the Great Hyperspace War as well as some equipment from those stories. But on the whole, KOTOR is it's own thing.

And you don't really need any background info, KOTOR was the first game set in the Star Wars universe during this era. It was meant to be your introductionary story to the Old Republic Lore

Is TOR no longer canon?

I played it when I was about 11 years old expecting a cool Star Wars lightsaber game. Until then I had only seen the movies and I was blown away by the game and got totally sucked into the EU after finishing it. If you really don't know anything about the game I'd start playing it now because it has a major spoiler that most people have already had spoiled for them.

Not mandatory but if you're interested in it, I recommend you to check the Knights of The Old Republic comics, it's one of the best work that came out of the extended universe.

But there's only a few references to the game here and there.

it's set before the movie canon so i don't think it matters much either way. i would imagine anything that doesn't clash with any of the new stuff is canon, it's an EA game and Disney gave them the license so anything they do is unofficially given a blessing.
