The visual style was one thing, but people mostly hated it because for a remake, it still stuck pretty true to the source - which meant a lot of the later series features and upgrades were nowhere in sight.

Yuck it up all you want, everything past the SNES is what people are used to and so when you go back to archaic mechanics, fans won't take to it well. At least Gaiden's remake is modifying and modernizing the gameplay while still keeping what makes it unique.

For one, they aren't rout. You have a goal of getting and seizing one castle to the next and the route to each castle is carefully planned just like maps in later games are also carefully planned. There's also the staples of having villages to save and units to recruit and items to find.

The problem people actually have with Genealogy is that horse units move around much easier and foot units get left behind. But that's not a problem with the maps at all. A future remake could just keep the maps the same and increase the MOV of non-mounted classes and bam, improvement.
