But after they finally commit to each other (during the novel "Times of Contempt") they are basically always together and separated only when events that are beyond their control occur (namely, the Thanedd coup, after which Yen is branded as a Traitor, kidnapped, forced to escape to Skellige, then kidnapped again, all while Geralt ends up AWOL due to injuries for a while, then embarks on a quest to find Ciri without having a clue about where she might be).

Yen's behavior changes completely. She starts to get extremely Jealous about Geralt being with other women, whereas first she didn't really care. Geralt also changes, as he starts thinking about hanging his swords to the wall and settle down with Yen (another reason for which Triss romance ending looks like complete bs). These are Yennefer's last words in the book. It doesn't really sound like someone that will choose her "freedom" over you.

A story Isn't simply a series of events. A story and the level of quality of the story, is the direct result of the characters it involves, the setting in which it takes place and the lore that acts as a background for that setting. All of it was written by the guy you call a "hack".
