There's nothing inherently wrong with women playing or making video games. Yes, there are some really awful women in this industry, but, like with any group, there's always going to be some obnoxious part of an industry/consumer base. I can easily think of as many, if not more, men that I hate in this industry to match the amount of women I hate in this industry.

I do wish that more women were involved in better games and played better games though. A large amount of women who play games tend to stay on a casual level which limits their insight on games in general. Similarly, there is a large portion of female developers that seem to get roped into making story-focused adventure games with strong (see Mary Sue) female characters as the primary selling point. I'd like to see more females in both sides of the industry.

Actually playing games doesn't hurt but is not relevant for the vast majority of game dev positions as much as you might think otherwise. The only actual position that really needs to play video games is the director/lead designer positions, and potentially programmers.

As for politics this is just opinions and is completely arbitrary based on your personal preference. In fact it's actually unfounded, almost every work of fiction pushes politics. The ones you are complaining about are not just pushing politics, they're pushing politics in a hamfisted manner. People make this complaint then turn around and praise works from writers like Robert Heinlein or other hamfisted works but it's ones that agree with their politics.

All designers need to play games because they need to understand how the things they are creating fit within the framework of the game.

You can always tell when a game was made by animators who don't play games because they focus more on making the animations interesting or believable than they do on making them look good even when interrupted, when standing on uneven surfaces, or when you have to look at them for extremely long periods of time (like run loops or gunfire loops).

You can always tell when a game was made by composers who don't understand dynamic music, how to make something interesting to listen to when it loops for 45 minutes or how to make it easy to blend into more/less exciting states at random based on player action.

As someone who studies in a STEM field, women are the privileged class here, far from discriminated. They just need to ask and the best men in the class willl flock to them to explain everything in detail, give them their notes, help them with their projects. (which sadly probably has negative consequences on their level)

Perhaps in the actual industry it's different, but in STEM uni being a woman is definitely more of an advantage, it's like being a woman in an MMO: you get everything for free.

Young girls are taught that math and science shouldn't matter to them. Any women that make it to this point have to deal with the pervasive discrimination of western professional culture as a whole, but also the persistence of the male dominated field that they're in. Women are often not cited in studies they work in, or their findings are lifted and published by male counterparts.

As silly as that sounds, when I was working on my first undergrad degree, I worked in 3 different labs, 2 run by women researchers, and BOTH of those women had their data "referenced" (aka published in full) by male peers at that same university. No names were credited to that data (other than the name of the male researcher and his grad team as chief authors of the study).

Those instances occurred during my brief time with them, so I'm sure it wasn't the first time.

All in all the way women are treated in STEM (and sort of pushed out of it right from the start) is pretty rubbish.
