I played through the game. Finished it in 80 hours. Compared to the previous games:

Persona 5 is better in nearly every single way than 3 and 4 besides the sense of unity as a group and doing casual hangout stuff together. The people looking for a friendship simulator are disappointed. The "Twist" was shit after you calmed down.

It frames the whole game poorly, in my opinion. It would have been much more interesting to have the characters talk about planning the betrayal, then pull it off and watch it work flawlessly. Much better than everyone explaining the plot to you (which the character already knew about) after the event takes place.
It would have really helped to add some actual subterfuge to the Phantom Thieves. The Double-Betrayal worked for shock value, but once you actually think about it, it's as shitty a twist as in Heavy Rain, as it relies on the story being hidden from you, despite your character experiencing it.

Old SMT dungeons are trash. Dungeons crawlers are not about the dungeons, they are resource management games where the goal is to keep moving and survive. Also explains why gameplay is basic. They also aren't very good games save Megami tensei 1+2, which sucks because you really want to love them, especially SMT2.

SJ fails on both accounts. All it has going for it is story.

After two playthroughs and finally letting it all set in, this is what I gotta say:

Combat is much more fluid and you're granted with way more options than in past games
Dungeon design, while not quite at mainline level difficulty is leaps and bounds ahead of what P4 had to offer
Characters are, at their cores, quite likable despite their flaws with implementation, more likable than the P4 cast in my humble opinion
The somewhat darker tone as opposed to P4's 24/7 wacky hi-jinks is appreciated
Confidant bonuses are great and give incentive to complete them all aside from just liking the characters
Bringing back demons over generic shadows is great, especially if you're a longtime mainline fan, seeing all the little nods like Thor in the battle arena and the fights with the archangels makes for some great fanservice
Same with bringing back negotiation over shuffle time, even if it is super easy this time around

>The Bad
Weakest story pacing in the entire series, you spend 3 weeks with nothing but free time before coming to a screeching halt for one/two weeks of hours of cutscenes and repetitive exposition dumps, rinse, repeat
The party is super imbalanced in terms of plot importance; by the end of the game the members who matter are Joker (to get shit done), Makoto (to dump exposition on the player) and Futaba (for her deus ex machina-tier hacking skills)
Haru in particular is hit the worst with this; her relevancy to the story literally starts and ends with a single short dungeon. As much as I love her, you could remove her from the story and nothing essential would be lost
While the confidant bonuses are a good idea, they're simply too strong and by the late-game they squander whatever difficulty is left, even on Hard/Merciless
Mementos is a good idea but it's sorely lacking in development. It really needed a larger variety of sidequests and a way to CHANGE THE FUCKING MUSIC HOLY SHIT THEY GOT THIS RIGHT IN FES 10 YEARS AGO WHY DID THEY FORGET

p5 is far technically better and arguably better story wise.

But p3 and p4 were more comfy and you felt more like part of the group.
Mainly from all the outings and hanging out. Compared to the beach and Hawaii trip, where you couldn't move as much.

With that the world felt bigger. The music was all around better although p5 had some really nice tracks some weren't as great or memorable.

I would also add that they needed more group bonding events to make the party more believeable of being a group of good friends, nothing overtly postive and happy like 4 but it needed a little bit more excitement, it felt more like they were just accomplices instead

With all that said I would still say that the good defiantly outweigh the bad so I would say its a fine entry in the persona series

p5's ending was weird

Everybody was after the PT's heads and hated them.
Then they wonder if they actually exist

Killing the final boss didn't really change anything.

The point of a dungeon crawler which is how the series started is just getting though the dungeon. You don't need puzzles or traps if it is challenging and requires clever resource management. Of course you could just make the level design good too, or include real puzzles that work holistically with the dungeon and aren't just obviously tacked on.

I agree. Nier is far more ovaratted than Persona 5. And feels like people jack off over how great it is despite being more boring and needing to complete it 5 times. When in Persona 5 its just choosing the right choices to get the ending you want. Plus the NG+ kicks ass because everything carries over.

you felt a more sense of belonging, the music matched better with the time, seasons, you felt welcome everywhere while people hate you in p5.

The dorm felt like a place to chill and the city felt safe in p3 and all of inaba is a cozy town with natural wilderness.
p5 is like p3 with the city theme but people treat you with with hostility it honestly made me cringe at how stupid or overly done the characters were done for shock or rage value.

The problem is its a jrpg this won't continue long. Once you get the doctor to level 5 it pretty much ends you can grind forever and never fear running out of a SP. Even Nocturne loses this once you gain fast travel to major towns and can just full heal SP/HP each time.

Also Shadow Hearts Covenant had fine puzzles and solid level design. DDS/Nocturne have decent dungeons as well.

Strange Journeys last part is really the only shit show in the SMT series imo. Everything else is fine even if your small brain can't take it. I bet you're incapable of early horror games without a guide.

Uhh not to be mean to you but that is Golden which is the KH Final Mix version of Persona 4 which did not have that in the PS2 version. I am sure Persona 5 will have a updated version in a few years and add a ton of this stuff in there.
