The game shouldn't have been open world and I say that as someone who likes open world. It serves no purpose in XV other than a few optional dungeons, but you can get that without all the unused space this game has.

I'm honestly surprised people still treat Final Fantasy like a big release after 13, 1.0, and 15.

Not entirely - but Square Enix needs to learn a lesson about modern AAA development cycles. Once you announce a project, you really need to deliver it in a 2-3 year time frame at most.

Secondly, they need to streamline their design philosophy for the series. They need to establish the core reasons that people play Final Fantasy games and not allow those reasons to fall at the wayside in the interests of a litany of less important features.

I think most JRPG fans would agree that the first half of XV shows potential for a good game. The open world's design, the battle system and the characters built up in the game's first 8 chapters are betrayed by a rushed second act that fails to build on them in any meaningful way.

A lot of this comes from an over ambitious concept that was announced too early, and wasn't managed well at all.

The problem with a series like Final Fantasy compared to Dragon Quest is a lack of identity in game design. I'm not saying the series shouldn't innovate, but it needs to be less scattershot about it.

SE's design philosophy is at fault. Games should be built around the gameplay(in this case, battles), but as we have seen with the evolution of XIV and XV, SE tack on battle systems near the end of development and hope it goes well. It didn't. I would MUCH rather have had the ATB system. Magic wouldn't have been a shitshow, and overall battles would have had a fun strategic element instead of being flashy bullshit. They could have made the world slightly smaller and more interesting as a result, with the side effect of increased performance.

Persona, Bravely Default and Dragon Quest are fine as turn based games. I would like to see FF return to this model as well.

Valid, but the reason reclaiming the throne takes a backseat to beating Ardyn is because of the Daemons. The empire was turned into daemons, and Ardyn expressed an interest in doing this to everyone because he feels butthurt about people not rewarding him for being a nice guy 1000s of years ago.

Ardyn's motivations suck, but the central arc isn't THAT incompetent. The Royal arms and Summons collecting was really poorly handled, and the fact you had to watch a web series and a movie to get the most out of the plot is lame as fuck.

I miss when Squeenix put a bit more effort in their designs and was a bit more bold than just making overly stylized dudes and cunts that just serve to look like pop icons in order to look good on media other than the game.

Fabula Nova Crystallis in general was a mistake.

Final Fantasy, as a series, has fallen victim to its own success. Square Enix is too devoted to its fame that they keep trying to pump out more of them and fall back on aging novelties in the series instead of truly innovating or being creative.

They label is simply over-saturated now. It would be best if there wasn't another FF game until they are absolutely inspired to create one - rather than planning more for the sake of money.
