Yes, Le absolute evil maymay.
Probably the shittiest villain featured in the series so far. Even Edgelord Memedin is better than him.

Yes.
It's the only villain that lacks a motive apart from, "I'm the absolute evil. I collect souls". It is as generic as a villain can get in a fantasy setting. Basically bioware-tier, apart from the good writing that was used to present him.

So what should the Devil's motive be then? To get all the best armour and runestones in the game so he can go back to heaven and fight God with his level 100 sword ?

He's the devil, and he uses people for his own amusement by playing on people's sins. That's what he does. The joke completely went over your head

He's the devil. Lucifer wanted to be God, challenged him and then got thrown out of heaven and sent to Earth to dick around with the humans, who also were made to stay on Earth because Eve ate the apple. Or at least that's what religious people think.

>But his initials spell G.O.D.

Fucking duh, he wanted to be God. That's the whole point of his story in the bible. Of course he's going give himself a name that somehow makes him seem like God. But he's not. Cause he's full of sin too, arrogance. And that's what led to Geralt and that other dude beating him in a game of wits.
>>

You really are trying to hard at this point.
>>
>>375816607
>Cause he's full of sin too, arrogance

>>
>>375816194
His motive is exactly what should be. The point is that a demon/devil whose motive is being evil for the sake of being evil is a shitty, uninteresting type of villain. Overused in pretty much every type of fantasy setting since the invention of fantasy literature.

The best villains are those with human, understandable motives. The absolute best type of villains are those whose motives make you question your own morality.
This has always been the case in the witcher lore (especially in the novels and stories). O'dimm just doesn't fit in well in it.
>>
>>375816607
Or you know, maybe a trickster demon that wants people to think of him as all powerful would use initials like that

He is just an allegory for a 30yr old virgin.
Had one single relationship in his long lifetime and it was with an adult human woman that had already experienced life and love, and all the bitterness and malicious shit that comes with it.
During that relationship he behaved like an obsessed 16yr old boy having his first high school crush. This is something that would scare off any adult woman, let alone someone as fucked up and broken as Syanna.
So he got friendzoned and that's where the relationship should have ended, would it have been a relationship with a normal woman. But Detlaff (not understanding the concept of friendzone) continued pushing, and Syanna (being an extremely fucked up individual) saw the chance to use him for her own ends.
After finding out that he was exploited like a fool and used by his former lover, he reacted in the only way someone like him could have possibly reacted: by having a great 'tism fit.

With that said, I'm pretty sure that if Detlaff was given the possibility to play TW3, he would have definitely chosen to romance Triss

Was there "supposed" to be some kind of "reveal" with Gaunter? Immediately after I talked to him in the beginning of W3 I knew we would be seeing him later, the only thing that surprised me was that it took so long (assuming the DLC takes place after the main story), and immediately when he branded Geralt with that face tattoo, I knew he was some kind of genie or a powerful demon who's gig is to make deals/grant wishes. The concept is great and they presented it quite well, but did anyone playing the game really remain as oblivious as Geralt seemed to be after meeting Gaunter in the crossroads and all that shit? I thought a "crossroads demon" who fulfills wishes is a pretty common urban legend.

I'm fucking tired of entry level /lit/ trying to tell everyone a good villain needs to be as human as possible.

The best kind of evil is one you can't understand. The kind who's machinations are so absolute, pervasive, and impossible to totally conceive that it makes your ideals seem weak and petty. Something so magnanimous and oppressive that it makes you wonder why even struggle against it. Why try to change, why fight at all?

And the answer is as resolute as it is insane.

A good villain counters the hero. But this "he might be right" bullshit just muddies the waters. If he's right, why the fuck is the story not centered on him?

The hero has to be right, or the hero has to be able to answer the question of his resolve by opposing such a negative force.

There's a million ways to make a villain. You're fucking stupid to think it's any right way.

Evil you can't even understand is fucking boring and stupid. The villain does need to counter the hero, but the best way in which he can do this is by making the player or viewer question his own morality. That or just be such an annoying shit that the audience really wants to overcome and beat his ass into the ground.

Lovecraftian warp monsters are not good villains. At that point he's not even a mirror for the hero, just a mindless oppossing force that's not even interesting to see the hero overcome.
>>
>>375829743
Sort of agree.
Motivations are absolutely secondary next to the villain's personality, quirks, actions and depth. But it's not like good villains can't be on either side of the spectrum between reasonable and completely irredeemable. I enjoy both "did nothing wrong villains" as well as Joker types or villains with unclear motivations or even those who are simply evil and loves it.
Basically, motivations villain's motivations hardly ever matter if the villain him/herself isn't interesting.

Gaunter doesn't have to be an understandable or relatable person to make the characters reflect on their actions.

they need to be fucking interesting that's what they need.
>>
>>375830425

Evil you can't understand is certainly not boring, and if it's stupid you just haven't seen it.

The simplest most universal example I can give you is The Empire from Star Wars, Sauron in Lord of the Rings, or Mephistopheles though he doesn't necessarily serve as a counter.

Their motives are ultimately ambiguous. Their machinations are grand and span generations and leave a single man humbled in their majesty.

Evil can be sympathetic. But true evil is beyond explanation. It's something that should make the viewer and the hero occupy the same space in time, on their knees quivering out a hysterical cry of bitter dejection asking what are they alone supposed to do?

And then the answer is there, just on the next page.
>>
>>375831830

They gave to be right. If they are nit right then they cannot succeed or you've failed as a writer.

You're mistake is thinking I mean from page one the character needs to be right and true in orientation.

A story isn't a man with the answer. It's the man who can find one.

How are we supposed to solve our problems in our personal lives when our heroes cannot in a fantasy?
>>
>>375818878

It's a pretty interesting story. The most compelling part of the Night King is that the principal reason he's such a threat is no one is actually preparing for him. But the exposure of his origin was so weak. At least so soon after his establishment.

She basically was a plot device meant to trigger Geralt's longing for Ciri. After that, she turned into a comic relief character. Her, Cahir and Milva were all likeable characters overall. To bad that by the end of LotL, Sapkowski badly wanted to know what pulling a G.R.R.M. feels like.

An interesting can be one about a man with THE answer, what matters is what he does with it.
An intersting story can also be about a man losing answers too, or even searching butt never finding.

>How are we supposed to solve our problems in our personal lives when our heroes cannot in a fantasy?

Real life dictates what problems you can solve, sometimes fantasies full of success are simply unrealistic and more importantly UNRELATABLE.

He actually is referenced in Blood & Wine. He isn't killed or vanquished, he just stops bothering Geralt

Let's see his powers, cause this shit is fun

>Can control time at will, even selectively
>Can summon storms instantly
>Can grant wishes and create binding contracts
>Can collect souls
>Can torture ghosts and drag them with him
>Can see and know anything apparently, except what is hidden by special magic (Isle of Mists)
>Cannot be killed, only banished temporarily
>Has his own pocket dimension and shadow minions
>Can cast complex curses
>Can fly/walk on air

Maybe I even forgot some stuff.

Makes me laugh when people call him a simple demon. His powers are off the charts. He is the closest thing to the actual devil in the Witcher universe. Even the Unseen Elder would have no chance against him.

Him/her/it being boring or not is a matter of personal taste in the end.

Personally I found O'dimm completely out of place in the witcher lore. A recurring theme of the books and the games is that "evil" is a relative concept and there is no such thing as truly good or truly evil. All good characters have flaws and there are no paragons of morality among them. At the same time all bad characters (even some monsters) have a motive behind their actions and even redeemable qualities.
Plus O'dimm it is extremely unoriginal as a character. He is basically a djinn on steroids but, unlike djinns, he has a really shitty backstory. He is evil. He collects souls and fucks with people for his own enjoyment. That's it. Dull as fuck.

Amazing response.

Yes they can. But a good hero, and a story surrounding one is about him find the slot for the missing puzzle piece. Again, there's an illusion of depth to your idea of a "quality" hero defined purely by his flaws.

>Real life dictates what problems you can solve, sometimes fantasies full of success are simply unrealistic and more importantly UNRELATABLE.

Real life does not dictate what a character goes through, however. And more importantly I never said a story is a rampant series of success. In fact I say the opposite. The ultimate success can compensate for a lifetime of failure.

Let's look at Samurai Jack. He's got the answer to the problem. He's a great hero. His story is almost entirely a series of failures. Up to the point he lost the key item, and even his key characteristic: his resolve.

Jack is facing an evil beyond total understanding in Aku. Jack started the whole show with the answer right in his hand. But a series of events lead the solution further away from reach. To a point where he's despairing over the possibility he has failed.

The entire new season has pretty much predicated on this arc of Jack resolving himself, and getting the key to victory back.

You seem to be missing the point. A great hero is ultimately good. And should be defined as such despite their hurdles. Despite success and failure.

I think Gaunter's strength is that he's an abstraction in the witcher world. He's a left fielder in a firm morally relative place.

That doesn't make him a bad character. To me he was refreshing because every character having their perfectly good reason for being this way was boring. He seemed stable, constant.

In fact. He's the catalyst to this revelation I had.
