Minecraft back then was simpler, eating food to heal was much easier than actually having potions ready, or approaching mobs sensibly because food was not a life line anymore.

Once you had a farm going you were set, kill a few pigs and you had all the health you need. Old bows were easy mode, just spam and fire away, no need to take damage.

Minecraft is focused on open world sanbox building with platform adventure elements. Bosses and story progression are optional which doesnt affect the overall game while

You're doing it wrong. Nether is suppose to be your metro/fast travel dimension. If you want to gather rare materials or go exploring like you suggested then you need to travel or build tunnels through it. Also cleaning out nether fortresses is fun. Paragliding and finding ender fortresses in the end is also creepy and exciting. You actually have 0 creativity and need the game to tell you to explore instead of exploring and building yourself. I'd advice buying Farcry games or something in the future.

It was pretty cool once. The big destructible worlds and all the shit you can build and walk around in is really neat, but Mojang put their focus in all the wrong places and it turned into a clusterfuck of bad design.

Pretty great at first. Being able to reshape the entire world was pretty unusual at the time, and building stuff was fun.

Things went downhill with hunger meters and tacked-on bullshit like the enchantments. Nowadays it's only known for being played by the most autistic of children. It's also one of the early games in the new wave of western indie games in the past decade, and a direct influence for a lot of shitty indie survival games.

The modpack variants like Tekkit were good fun.
The creative engineering and mechanics were what made it great, I guess the fantasy elements drew in the wrong crowd.

I still play it with my little bro. We've built an oasis farmstead next to the jungle, and we're building a skyrailway to a holiday house in the 'alps' area. He's 7 and I get to teach him about real life lessons while enjoying time with him, other parents or siblings could do the same I suppose.

I see no problem with this, really the only big issue is the quality of what people accept as mods. There are generally very few high quality modpacks and they're either in every fucking modpack for years, or in none because they have conflicts or don't work well in multiplayer.


One of my biggest gripes is the severe lack of mods with custom mobs that are actually fun to fight.

I think trying to be more Terraria-like broke whatever feel the game had.
Even then, everyone had a different idea of what minecraft should be, it's totally unreasonable to hold the devs to these expectations. It explains why the modding scene is so fucking active and vibrant.

Terraria has the Guide NPC that tells you literally everything you can make with any item that has the 'material' tooltip, and everything else you also need to make it, and where. On top of that, there's an NEI-like mod in Cheat Sheet.

You don't really need the wiki for anything except discovering shit that is more often than not totally optional to progression, but would likely make it easier, but all that really does is destroy the magic of finding something you never knew existed.

I've owned Terraria since very close to initial release, being one of those people that pirated the early version then bought the full game. From that initial purchase to now, having gotten a new character and new world with every significant patch, I've accrued over 3000 hours of playtime between single player and multiplayer.

These are not negatives. 2D brings its own set of pros and cons compared to 3D. For modding, it actually makes making new content considerably easier because you won't have to fuck with modeling and 3D animation shenanigans, which have a general tendency to hold back any minecraft mod not manned by 10+ people (thaumcraft being a notable exception, holy shit Azanor is a wizard).

The limited world size gives Terraria an unrivaled level of cohesion that Minecraft simply does not have when considering both games at the base level, to the point that Minecraft needs mods even to compete on that level.

I honestly hate comparing Terraria and Minecraft, but if people are going to make those comparisons to begin with, I am going to try my best to tear them down.

When Terraria updates, mods are broken for a week at most.
