PC started this trend actually, with mplayer, dwango, battle.net etc...
And there are advantages and disadvantages if compared to the free MP present on PC.
With the biggest disadvantage being you being unable to own your own server to play with friends after the main server gets shot down.

Consoles are just not very nostalgia friendly, but i'm pretty sure this will be fixed with the power of the emulation.
