To be fair, the combat is probably the weakest part of the game. I mean it's much better than Oblivion and Skyrim combat but there's still certainly room for improvement. I'm hoping with OpenMW we get some really interesting combat overhauls. A M&B style combat system that still retains the dice rolling aspect could work really well I think.

The only mods you need are the morrowind code patch, which is essentially just bugfixes, morrowind graphics extender which allows widescreen resolutions and the delayed dark brotherhood attack, which delays the event that triggers the start of the tribunal expansion main quest.

I've always felt like M&B combat was overrated. I appreciate how much control you have over your sword but the way you actually perform those moves physically feels like clunky to me. The combat is fucking garbage, the only good thing is all the extra spells in the game, but at the same time those spells are so imbalanced that it completely wrecks the fucking game too. DND Dice mechanics are a fucking holdover from tabletop when they couldn't handle the kind of combat we get in games today. That game was also infinitely more balanced than Morrowind while not removing the hundreds of fun spells.

But fine let's pick a single player to compare to instead. There's games like Dark Messiah that have lost the dozens of spells of morrowind yet the combat in it is much better designed and has you using your environment and spells in unison to fight enemies. Would more spells have been cool? Sure. But I'll take a handful of spells with depth to their mechanics than bethesda's ocean wide puddle of mechanics. Morrowind fags jerk off this game like it was the best thing ever when it wasn't even the best CRPG that came out in it's year.

Playing the game for the first time, having the most fun I've had in an RPG since New Vegas.

I played Oblivion and Nehrim some years ago but I barely remember them. I forced myself to finish the former and didn't think the latter was all it was cracked up to be and couldn't be bothered to finish it.

Also, I sure hope there will be a way to convert vanilla engine saves to OpenMW.

Most stuff is heavy bug-fixing. There seems to be internal debate about when to actually do releases because there's so little to be done.
OpenMW DID have dynamic shadows, and reimplementing is not an issue according to Scrawl, but it's not a priority.
Most people are following TES3MP now, its multiplayer fork.
