I'm pretty bad so probably not the one to ask, but having witnessed one good Ralf, I'll tell you this: you really can't get by playing him like 98/02 Ralf, just relying on solid normals and reserved playing. He actually has combos this time around, and you're going to need to use them--his inputs are no longer suited to his old playstyle, but definitely work for combos now. You won't get super duper long stuff with him, but spend some time in the lab and try to work out some MAX mode strings. That's about all that I can really say, other than that he's not TOTALLY different, still bear in mind your solid and reserved use of normals I guess.

It's been really poorly explained a good number of times so I'm going to try to do a better job even though I'm going to get some things wrong inevitably. Smash has a really bad issue with polling inputs, and the stick on the gamecube controller in general is a piece of shit. Basically, because the analog is constantly scanning for inputs at an insane high rate, occasionally it will just drop inputs because it cannot send that much data that constantly. Additionally, when you flick the analog stick around, it will spring back to neutral but then wiggle a little bit causing accidental inputs in directions.

Now, all of that sounds like a lot of buildup over fucking nothing and you probably don't understand why a malfunctioning controller would help at all, but here's the thing, the specific malfunction (that happens in roughly 1 out of every 50 controllers) is that the potentiometers are fucking faulty and don't send inputs as constantly because they're borderline dying basically. Because it skips MORE inputs than a GCC normally does, the inputs you actually do are more consistent because it's skipping a lot of the garbage you need to move through to get to the input that actually matters. It also has an unintended benefit of cutting a lot of accidental inputs. This matters because there are turn around inputs that are really beneficial in Melee that require 1-2 frame inputs that are normally fucking impossible, but on a malfunctioning controller that is cutting out garbage inputs, it becomes more doable. This is why people say that it's consistent on digital controllers like the Smash Box because digital inputs do the same thing of skipping all of the garbage inputs to go straight to the input that matters.

Actually Hit Box never blocked both directions because the hardware always blocked it. Blocking in both directions was discovered in MvC3 on a modded Madcatz TE that was converted into a Hit Box. If you play competitive smash, you realize your controller really does matter quite alot due to the analog control sticks. Seriously, I practiced shield dropping for months and months and could never do it consistently enough to rely on it. One day I picked up my friend's controller and I could do it 100% of the time. There are several techniques like this including empty pivots, dashback, dashback out of crouch, and shield dropping. It's not unreasonable that Armada would need the right controller to play at a top level, but it is pretty lame that he had no backups on standby.

Honestly, the only one that comes close in difficulty, imo, is strictly alpha pat SCV.
Literally everything is a cake walk in comparison than trying to win any notable tournament.

Well not necessarily, the only technique affected by the defect controllers is dash-backs: literally dashing backwards from standing position. Basic shit. Here's da breakdown:

We could ban the defect controllers, but there would still be other issues like some normal controllers dash-back better than other normal controllers. There's always going to be scenarios where one guy has a better controller than his opponent. It happens every tournament.

How the fuck would we even enforce a ban on the defects? Are we going to test each individual player's controller and run the statistics to find out if it dashes-back good enough to be a defect? You'd have better luck enforcing an adderal ban.

I dont get it. what is the problem pat's mad about? That people are bringing in controllers with macros in them or something? I never really looked into the fight game community

What is it about Smash Bros. that attracts the worst kind of people? My roommate has only ever played Smash 4 and spends an obscene amount of time playing it
