Reach is the best Halo game in terms of enemy design and behaviour.

The Elites in Halo 2 were fucking shit to fight because they removed their trademark strafing for some reason, and the brutes were just bullet sponges. Plus they made the Elites all hunched over and too silly looking in 2 and 3. Reach got the balance of CE again.

Reach is still unironically my favourite campaign just because the enemies are so fun to fight.

I think the problem was more of staying "humans vs Covenant" even though the Covenant didn't fucking exist anymore. Humanity and the Elites should have stuck together, with the new trilogy starting out as joint-task-force efforts to clear planets of Brute Remnant forces, only to stumble upon the next big enemy faction.

I mean that's neat and all, but Bungie gave a lot of exposition in the Halo games, without forcing it down your throat, and without making you read extensively.

Not that the grimoire cards are so terribly extensive, but that they were added in, seemingly as an afterthought after the game had been out a bit, really pisses me off. There were little bitty moments in Destiny and the trailers that preceded launch that clearly showed that there was a story arc across the game.

I also don't mind that not all elites were on board with being pals with Humanity. HOWEVER, I do mind that the way it's presented, you only ever interact with the hostile elites until about halfway into the second game. That infighting should have been shown as infighting from the start if they wanted us to know that Arby and the events of Halo 3 are still relevant.

Man, that scene where the Librarian explains all the chosen one bullshit is one of my favorite moments in the series. Not because of what's actually happening in the game. Saying John's luck was destiny or whatever the fuck takes all the moments in John's life, all the brutal firefights, all the crash landings, all those near misses, and says "lol well yea you were always gonna survive ur the chosen one". Why I love it is because I was playing it night of release split screen with my friend. The way I see it the Elites were united purely to defeat the Prophets and the Brutes in Halo 3. After that was over they started infighting over the Covenant religion.

The new "Covenant" in Halo 4/5 aren't Covenant strictly. They are just seperatist forces that still follow the Covenant Religion. They don't follow the Prophets anymore.

Remember a big part of the schism was the Brutes and Prophets trying to wipe out the Elites, so that alone unified the Elites against the Covenant.

No it's for the fanbase to decide. There is a reason Halo 2's campaign was inferior to both Halo CE and 3 because half of it's missions were boring, bland, hallways. Hell all the game's levels were split in two to make it look like there were 15 levels when there were only 7. Halo 1 had a great story that was fully completed instead of filling like a game setting up for a sequel. Halo 2 had terrible boss fights, and the only time the campaign was even a lick of fun is when you played Master Chief's levels. Halo is supposed to be a galactic adventure where you're exploring alien worlds and having large scale battles and it's up to you to figure out the best plan to get through different situations through Halo's unique sandbox gameplay not a character driven story.

The only actual wide open levels in CE were Silent Cartographer and Halo. Everything else was the occasional open area book ended by narrow tunnels. Halo 2 has levels like Outskirts and Delta Halo which are some of the best in the series, in my opinion.

halo 2 wasn't without it's weak spots though. A lot of the Arbiter's levels were so drab they used to give me headaches.

And I commented on that Master Chief had the good missions in Halo 2 while Arbiter's sucked. but I loved Halo CE's first half, I even liked the Library and Two Betrayals in the game's second half. Also Halo 3 wins the title of having the best levels in the series, The Ark and The Covenant, damn those were some good levels.

No, CE was my first, and I read fall of reach before I played CE.

I don't think CE's campaign is outright bad, but I do think it's the most flawed in the series as far as the mission design goes.

Maybe I'm inferring here but where is this defensiveness coming from? Everyone agrees, and has for years, that CE had some serious issues with some of it's design choices. The fact that several levels are just another level but backwards should show you that. It's not an indictment of the game itself but it does make you scratch your head a little.
