I laugh everytime I see this, because of the sheer amount of people who never played the game swallow it up. It was a joke choice among others that had no bearing on the story.

Kanji is bi. I don't know why people act like having masculinity issues is a straight exclusive thing. It truly is simple to understand. Kanji liked Naoto before and after the reveal, simple. Shadows also show ones true self. Yes it is true that the shadows accentuate ones true feelings,in kanjis case it is the desire to be accepted by ANYONE, but they are never lies. Kanji is not some bareback slut, but definitely wouldn't mind if Naoto had feminine penis in her pants.

It's annoying because people always fucking forget it's a Japanese game. The Japanese have very different views on what cross-dressing means.

In Japan, crossing-dressing (in media) is more about rejecting your role in society, in the sense that if you're born a woman, you must do "womanly" tasks, like feminine hobbies or housework.

The same applies to Chihiro in Danganronpa. He dressed up and behaved like a girl not because he wanted to be a girl, but he was bullied by his classmates for being "weak" and being interested in unmanly hobbies. He finds it's easier for people to accept him because he acts like a girl. It's not stated or even really implied that he even wants to do this and a huge part of his character is him manning up and having the balls to stand up for himself.

Kanji on the other hand probably skews more towards bi. His dungeon manifests in a way that is about love and acceptance. He has issues about being effeminate, but also wants just to be with somebody, male or female, as he says himself. Do people really think that the bathhouse theme was a throwaway reference? That when compared to other dungeons it's suddenly not as literal? Especially when compared to Naotos that doesn't have any sexual themes? Wouldn't his dungeon just be an plush factory with cute shit, instead of a gay porno?

Well the Shadow is basically the opposite of a Persona. The Persona is the person's idealized self that they want to be seen as. The Shadow is everything beneath that mask, including what they don't want to be seen as. Rumors and the collective unconscious have always been big things in Persona, and even mainline SMT. Truth ends up being what everyone thinks. Imagine if growing up, everyone thought you were gay when you weren't, and it became one of your biggest insecurities. That idea of a homosexual version of you is now part of you, even if you don't want it to be. Your Shadow in a Persona game would be the manifestation/personification of your biggest insecurities. Kanji's biggest insecurity related to all the rumors that he was gay, and thus his Shadow took the form of the extremely flamboyant Shadow Kanji. His Persona was a big macho machine thing because that's an interpretation of his ideal self. His Shadow self also partially twisted this ideal into the gay thing as well with the macho gay dudes.

I think that there's some intentional ambiguity left in towards Kanji with the way he phrases certain things ("It's not a matter of guys or chicks... I'm just scared shitless of rejection."), but I would say all the subtext points towards him being heterosexual. It doesn't mean that Shadow of homosexuality isn't there for him, just that people need to learn what a Shadow is.

Shadows exaggerate HEAVILY. A passing feeling or thought that was tucked away can very easily become the dominant trait of a shadow.

Kanji was already dealing with issues for liking effeminate things. Having a sudden attraction towards Naoto and wrestling with that (when he was probably picking up subconscious clues that she wasn't actually a guy but didn't realize it consciously) results in a heavily overplayed extra flamboyant gay guy, just because he's struggling with some thoughts.

Not to necessarily say he can't be bi, but rather that using his shadow as an argument for that is foolhardy. A feeling is not the same thing as an extreme absolute.
