this game is NOT designed for this. How is it normal that you have to brake to almost a full stop in courses with 5 tight turns one after the other? (Yoshi's Circuit, Dragon shit meme, etc)
And then you got bottomless pits and course obstacles?
Not to mention the broken item shit. If you're in first place, you'll get coins 80% of the time so you can't defend unless you get double item box. In which case it's 100% coin, and then a banana.

I've been obsessed with 200 since it came out 2 years ago. I don't know why anyone says you need to break. Whenever my friends and I play 200, we always have a mix of bikes and karts and I never see anyone breaking. You guys really need to learn how to drift, for a bunch of those sharp turns where you'd normally break you should just start drifting earlier.
Once you get the hang of it there's no going back.

Buy it, it's fun. Items are the worst part of it, triple red shells are way more common than they're supposed to be. 2nd and 3rd place get them often, it should be a 7th place and below item.
Also, there is no way to avoid red shells by using the terrain/walls like you could in MK Wii. If you see a red shell coming, you will 100% get hit by it.

But I get what you're saying, the tracks aren't designed for that kind of FAST, and the AI knows it, and that's why they're so shit at it

Mario Kart 8 was a family come together thing for me and my brothers, so we always competed in 200cc. And I can tell you this, builds that were viable in 150cc may not be viable in 200cc. You can't min/max speed to win anymore and lightweights move too slow, you need to start looking alternatives.

Personally, I go for light heavyweight (DK, Roy or Waluigi) with the city tripper and an accel parachute. Can't remember my wheels though.

Also, learn to NOT boost with a drift and also learn to double drift, as in drift to another drift without boosting. Drift boosts are still needed to get ahead, but 200cc needs much more concentration and control from the players

Half the cups in 200CC I beat with Morton top speed build, and only the other half I had to use a acceleration build. And no I didn't hit walls, get good scrub. I can't fucking believe there are people on /v/ so bad that they feel they can't beat 200CC without braking. That's pathetic, even I had to switch to a better build on some cups, but even then I never had to brake.

Items are unfair as they currently are because they don't work as intended. When you get hit by a red shell, you should be punished an amount equal to that.

But the density of items and severity of how much they slow you down in MK8 means it's not as simple as that. Being in 2nd and getting hit by a red shell doesn't just mean falling back to 4th or 5th. It means being stopped and then hit by another three more items before you actually leave hitstun, dropping you all the way back to 10th.

Except items fail to do this because anyone who has spent any reasonable amount of time with online MK8 can tell you many races are decided on the very first set of item boxes. Whoever makes it out of that RNG roll in first and with a protective item is extremely likely to win the race because the player in first only has to protect from red shells at most, while the players second through fourth are fighting off the clusterfuck of items the folks in fifth through seventh are throwing at them.

I've literally just stopped playing an online race where exactly this happened. I took first on the first turn, and got a banana as an item. Thanks to its protection I maintained momentum while the guy in second couldn't get anywhere fucking near me because he kept getting hit by red shells. The race ended with my a quarter of a lap ahead of the fuckfest that was 2nd through 7th.

As they are in MK8, items punish way too much while also failing to equalize the playing board like they're intended to, ultimately resulting in a mechanic that only serves to weaken the core racing by making it a game of "Who gets a good roll of RNG out of the first set of item boxes".

I agree that the items aren't aggressive enough for first place. MK8/D is awful about letting you take an early lead and keep it. Part of the problem is that penalties have been nerfed due to complaints about item spam but the game needs the harsh penalties. Lakitu recovers you instantly instead of letting you free fall for several seconds. You recover from shells almost instantly. There are boost pads fucking everywhere so you can always instantly get back to top speed (This also breaks balance to favor heavily speed over acceleration).

There need to be more items specifically designed to bork first place. Maybe a Dizzy from Yoshis island that shows up in places 2-5 and only affects players in front of you and reverses your controls, or an item that halves 1st players speed, etc

Most of the ones that completely despise 200cc with a blood hatred don't even do that well in 150cc to begin with.

If /v/eekend is anything to go by, lot of players in 150cc games were taking routes (like the walls on N64 Toad Turnpike, the wall on Toad Harbor, not doing the jump off route on RR8, not taking the left most route on N64 Yoshi Valley, the water route in GCN Sherbet, the 'secret left exit' at the end of Wii Wario Gold Mine, etc.) and then wonder why they constantly never win.
They don't win, and they'll just always complain until they fucking get some skill.
They'll never win, much less win in a mode that demands a little bit more track knowledge and car handling skill.

Depends on your style and skill.

Do you use items as you get them? Do you usually only remember 50% or less of each course you go, or have some courses you don't remember the outlay of at all? You should go for acceleration and handling, the safest option. You can have more mistakes because you can recover from them more quickly.

Do you use items depending on what place you are in, or even save them for specific spots on the course? Do you have every course in the game memorized, to exactly what kind of drift boost is the best to use on each specific turn? Do you prepare so far ahead while in first, that it would take three blue shells for everyone else to catch up to you? If this is you, you can probably go with low handling and low acceleration for the best top speed possible, as the higher this is, the further away from the pack you can get while in first, so long as you play the course flawlessly and always guard yourself.
