The exact same scenario plays out if you choose to kill Ryoji though, except no one remembers at all and they all die. So it could also be that Nyx's arrival would have left a few months/days before it killed everything, and he's simply taking the hit for everyone at that time.

No way. The cast in 5 barely interact with each other. Fucking Mitsuru and Junpei at the beginning of the game have more interaction than the latter half of 5. It doesn't help that in 3 the characters have a month full of development for them to come to terms with what their fighting for and their reason to fight Nyx during January. In 5, Potter gives a 2 dialogue prep talk and everyone is good to go.
