I say this as a Nintendo stockholder: The switch may -MAY- get to the same sales volume as the Wii only if there's third party support to back it up.

And it doesn't mean doom for Sony, since the PS4 has been some years on the market. It is obvious that the people that wanted a PS4 already bought one, so the sales numbers have been dwindling down. Sure, Sony may have to push their newest console -not the Vita successor (if there's one), but the home console- a little sooner than expected, but that's far from them being out of the video game business.

As for Microsoft, Scorpio's position is harder to read. It's being touted as an upgrade for the One, but its specs and the hype behind it suits better a new console altogether. Maybe Microsoft's marketing department will sell it as such some months after launch.

In it's first year Switch is getting a mainline Zelda, a Mario Kart which even though is a port is breaking sales records for the series, Splatoon 2, Xenoblade 2, a mainline 3D Mario. Even with as much normie-bait as BotW is, the Switch doesn't have the same level of potential as the Wii; the Wii was the first successful motion-control console, a gimmick that was highly sought after, and it came with a very simple, easy-to-understand game about sports, for free. This is what skyrocketed its sales; old people, soccer mom types, etc. would pick it up because of the bombastic claim that it's "healthy video games". Not to mention Wii Fit, and a MUCH better launch line-up than the Switch's one game.

Then, look at the Switch. It's marketed directly toward normies, solely to sell Zelda. And they did that, and, as the numbers show, it did that job well. But now, everyone's done with it. The Switch doesn't really bring anything new to the table; mobile gaming is something that's been around for ages for normies, they don't care about being able to play Zeldarim on the go when they have hundreds of free games they can play on the go without lugging a big awkward controller around that only lasts 4 hours (or whatever the BotW battery life was). The only new game anyone with a Switch has to look forward to is that new mario game, but I'd wager money on people quickly beating that game and getting over it within the month. Best case scenario, Nintendo announces a total knock-out of a line-up at E3, but that's insanely unlikely with Nintendo's current track record.

All this aside, anyone who thinks the Switch will do better than the Wii is a moron. That's not to defend the Wii either, but the Wii was revolutionary; not good, mind you, but everyone at that waggle control shit up, with the vast majority of sales going to moms and retirement homes; to that market, the Switch is just a big tablet where you have to pay $60 for games instead of nothing.

If we take todays equivalent to Virtual Boy, that being occulus rift and the many iterations from other companies such as google, samsung, sony, etc, they haven't been a success. The issue isn't the VR the issue is that it just doesn't work.

Yes Sony will be that stupid but look at it from their perspective. The PSP was a success, especially in Japan (Sony is international but they are still a Japanese company). The Vita was a failure, but it found a niche in Japan. The PS4 is not doing good in Japan. Nintendo's Switch is a huge initial success, even in Japan where Japanese third parties are already moving projects to the platform. Nintendo has no competition. What do you think they will just leave this alone? They should but they won't.

So here is what I predict. It won't be called Vita or anything that reminds people of that failure. It might be backwards compatible with it and the PSP. It won't be a portable PS4, there is no way to miniaturize the hardware at present. It will, like the Vita, use smart phone and tablet hardware. Probably the same ARM/PowerVR duo. Something from 2017.

It will probably have a better CPU than the Switch, a comparable (but slightly worse) GPU, more RAM at slightly higher bandwidth (6GB at 35 GB/sec... double bandwidth when docked), and a 1080p screen (but most games will render at 720p or lower on it). In other words it will be in the same performance ballpark as the switch with some better on-paper specs in some areas for dick waving. It will have detachable controllers cost whatever the Switch costs. And they will try to moneyhat Monster Hunter for the Nip market.

My guess is PS4 winds up at 80 million counting the Pro at five years (including the 2018 holiday period). Twice as much as what the 360 did by itself in its first five years but falling short of what the PS2 was at after five years (116 million... it went on to sell 37 million more and just for comparison the PS3 sold 56 million in those same exact years which when you think about it is not really flattering).

The only one affected here is Sony since they rely solely on console mindshare and sales to stay afloat. MS sells all their games on pc so they're making money either way even if you don't buy their console and opt to build a pc.
