I guess they already had the skybox and volcanic creator designed and didn't think enough about it. Interestingly, the player was originally going to walk along a giant chain holding iron keep from sinking deeper into the crater. It got cut for time but made it into the second DLC.

Yeah, the map physically fits together and the geography works out, but in DaS3 the world is literally collapsing on itself, areas that are supposed to be separated by hundreds of miles of territory are getting scrunched together so that they're now touching. The game tells you this explicitly in the intro and you see its' final form for yourself in the end of the game where the entire world gets jumbled up into a big pile of garbage.

This would be much better to be honest. The valley connects straight to the Iron Keep, but huge amounts of poison are in the way.
You have to go up earthen peak and kill mytha, and then stop the windmill to clear the poison.
Then you backtrackwarp because giving people warp from the beginning is terrible design back down the windmill. Place the enemies in such a way that they can see you coming from both ways. You could also add traps and stuff, and when you are going up they don't hit you so good, but when you are coming back down they hit you much easier.

middle pic shows how you would have gotten to Iron Keep in a way that makes sense (crossing volcanic plains/the caldera), the current iron keep skybox mesh actually shows some volcanic plain looking stuff but it cannot be seen normally unless you noclip out of the map, also one of the map dumps of 'hidden' mesh data in the map files shows that you would have definitely crossed solid ground to get into the keep

Bottom is probably an early version of what would get recycled into Eleum Loyce, dragon is another black dragon like Kalameet, and might have been the original concept for Ancient Dragon

Shanalotte giving the feather to the player was supposed to be a way more involved sidequest, so that scene was supposed to have more impact and the player was supposed to be a lot closer to Shanalotte than the final game bothered to show

That black dragon specifically never shows in the game, it's likely this was either intended to be the original Ancient Dragon fight, although it kind of does resemble the big dragon corpse you examine to enter the dragon's memories in the final game

The Manikins had their mask design changed, and they seemed to be more like assassins here who ambush the player for reasons unknown (maybe a secret society ala the one Mephistopheles in Demon's Souls belongs to, maybe a precursor to Londor in DS3)

You know what makes even less sense and has bugged the living shit out of me since I first played through the game? You know all those npcs you meet out in the world? You know, the ones who somehow managed to get ahead of you despite an army of monsters blocking the path. SOMEHOW they managed to make it to where they are without a single of said monsters noticing them. Like that guy in the fortress in the forest of giants who gives you the key to the Majula mansion, or that old mage in Old man's wharf, or the chick who's already in Earthen peak before you even lowered the fucking bridge (the one who turns out to be the daughter of the blacksmith in Majula). Did she just CLIMB over the fucking mountains to get there? And if so, where did she climb from? Why are none of the zombie pirates at the wharf attacking the old mage? You can literally kite them to the npc and they will still ignore him. Same goes for all these characters.

If DaS1 is anything to go by, every almost every NPC is from another world that's briefly connecting to your own any time you see them out and about. Time is convoluted and all that horseshit. Also it's a fucking video game, it wouldn't be very fun if all the enemies in every new area were already wiped out by an NPC who got there before you.

This makes sense. Playing devils advocate though, you could argue that if this is the case you'd rarely run into the same npc over time, and Majula would make no sense at all fully populated. DS2 was my first dark souls game and I've played every game in the souls series, so it has a special place in my heart, but there's a lot of obvious inconsistencies that don't show up as much in the other games. Gameplay wise I still think it's great (Except for Amana's shrine, fuck that area, shooting a bow for half an hour at stupid wizards just to fight the boss isn't fun), I didn't even notice how stupid the elevator to the sky was until I came here after playing it.

It was the same deal with Firelink Shrine in DaS1 too, only people would sometimes leave and come back and even leave for good in some cases when their quests were finished.

How far you walk in-game isn't indicative of how far things actually are. Another example is that it takes you from morning until night to reach Huntsman's Copse from Majula.

You can't use that as an excuse, dumb das2fanboy. In DaS3 when the lands are 100% scrambled like eggs, the world map still makes sense and you don't have invisible sky castes and cities that should be underwater that aren't underwater.
