GOAT video game casting?

literally half the Mad Men cast
>>
That's what happens when you waste your budget on crazy good facial mocap for a poorly done gameplay mechanic and forget to make the rest of the game good

Go jump on a flower or cower behind a broken wall, faggot. this is an adult topic.
>>
>>375748986
yes, thats why it was only done with the actors face and not his entire body.
this made the game look extremely jarring as fuck because the head would be animated realistically while the body movements look robotic. even though the body animation was done by motion capturing, it still looked weird when partnered with that face tech.

i think it was a pretty good experiment for rockstar though.

It's not the motion capture that was the problem, it's the fundamental way of how we render and animate bodies in games. Disney's 3D animation researchers solved this by actually having muscles simulated beneath the skin. They can use any cartoon or realistic body type, it doesn't matter as long as the musculature is well composed, the natural limits of the human body irl is simulated at near perfect level.

Their animators still add flair to the character movements though to lessen the impact of uncanny valley.

Half Life 2 was better than LA Noire, back in 2004.
>>
>>375750995
lol no you blind fuck.
>>
>>375750671
>It's not the motion capture that was the problem

I get what youre saying and its true but in this case, motion capure was one of the main problems.
the head capture and body capture were done completely different than each other so they both looked disconnected from each other.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aL9wsEFohTw
they even show a good example of it in the 2:00 mark. the body movement doesnt even match up with the head expression.

this is why games like the uncharted series do both the facial and body capture at the same time.
>>
>>375750671

>Disney's 3D animation researchers solved this by actually having muscles simulated beneath the skin.

Any vids or articles on this?

I always thought mocap was basically real life actors moving around and it instantly translated to computer animation.
>>
>>375750995
No. It was ahead of it's time sure, but not nearly as much as LA Noire was and still is.
>>
>>375747894
never played it, is it worth it? I love the 1940s setting and the music from what I heard, not so much the actual gameplay
>>
>>375751550
I enjoyed it, it can get pretty annoying though.

Driving is not enjoyable at all.

Exploring is unfun (kind of a bummer when the city is actually recreated fairly well)

It's okaysh, certainly fine for a playthrough.
>>
>>375750253
This part of the game's pretty funny in two ways:

1. Everybody thinks that Cole goes on this tangent after you select 'Doubt', but this is actually the response he makes after selecting 'Lie'
2. Selecting 'Lie' is actually the correct option here

More than that, while you're supposed to charge Jacob with the murder of his wife to get five stars on the case, it's ultimately revealed later in the plot that Jacob, as well as the other persons charged in the Homicide cases, were all falsely charged and then got silently released. You're just supposed to charge them basically because the LAPD has to set up the impression that they're doing a good job, whereas in reality they were very corrupt
>>
>That episode where you interrogate the Jewish jewellery shop owner
Do you think they'd let them make this in the current year +2?
>>
>>375751550
I liked it. Zero replay value though. Don't expect GTA clone it is more close to old school adventure with driving (and som shooting) between the sceens.
>>
>>375751745
Don't get me started on the Homicide string of cases. "The victim spent all night at a bar drinking with the temp bartender? No, let's not pursue that very obvious lead!" That whole plot line was such a circle jerk.
>>
>>375751779

This game is really historically accurate

>>
>>375752020
Homicide was the worst part of the game for sure. I'd much rather play burglary wich they scrapped. Or at least they shouldn't make all the cases connected. This was borderline retarded.

I enjoyed it a lot more once I realized that in terms of flow it was basically a 3D Phoenix Wright. I wish I could disable the ratings and the sound effects that told you if you were right or wrong though. I like it better as a sort of 'it unfolds differently based on your responses' a lot more than 'Okay so let's see how you did'
>>
>>375752220
Homicide would have been good if it wasn't so obvious and mentally retarded.
The entire chapter forces player do something that's clearly dumb, it's an awful game design.
>>
but there have been lots of games with full performance capture (voice, body and face) that surpassed LA Noire. They just don't have the same impact because LA Noire was the first to really utilise the tech and it was pretty revolutionary at the time.

Uncharted 4 is a good example of pretty much the best in the business when it comes to performance capture, gameplay being a bit stale and linearity aside you have to admit it's a very well animated game. Nu-Tomb Raider too.

>>
>>375751356
Not that anon, but even with mocap the animators will tweak with the data to achieve appropriate results. For example, fight scenes. You can't actually have the actors punch each other, so you have them act it out as best they can and then tweak it later to make the punches land and give the impacts weight etc.

This is what makes me so fucking mad actually.

They recreated the city, gave it a shitload of cars and stuff, only to make the missions linear as fuck and literally focus the game on travelling from point A to point B without any incentive to explore.

They'd rather make a mockery out of the centuries black people and women have had to struggle if it means they can shoehorn them into unfitting time periods.

Fuck man, the game's atmosphere and period dialogue were top notch. Too bad everything else was absolute shit, even a brain dead negro could figure out what was going on. Why didn't they allow to jump ahead in major ways if the investigation was leading you in a certain direction? Why have a ludicrously realistic open world but have no reason to explore in it? I hate open world games (except sleeping dogs and SR 3) and this open world was less boring to me because you're not supposed to do anything in it. It's more like an interactive movie like the last of us or uncharted, but with admittedly more fun cutscenes.

There were even times when people would lie for no reason and a mission with some pedo dude and a guy who seemed more likely a suspect and the game shouts at you if you don't try to lynch the pedo, and then it turns out neither one did it anyway.

This is one of my main complaints about the game. Whatever happens when you're driving between locations literally doesn't matter. You can even skip every car ride which is what I did constantly after a while. Fucking open world meme. It's like Rockstar has no clue how to make a non open world game even though they did Max Payne 3 around the same time.
>>
Because it was stupidly expensive for something most people wouldn't give a shit about.

There's a bunch of points where the lie/doubt stuff is awful, you know things that prove a lie but because it's not flagged as the specific thing you needed you would get shut down for it.

Also the story is garbage and badly done so none of it matters anyway.
>>
>>375760180
I do agree with the lie shit, If you pick something that's semi-evidence it just act as a doubt 2.0 instead of flat out telling you that you're wrong

I didn't like the mysteries in this game because they were so straight forward. Obviously they wanted to go for more of a cop action style than "locked room mystery" Sherlock Holmes style story, but I wish there could have been a few more twists and surprises. The case where the blood found in the car turned out to be pigs blood was pretty good. I was definitely wrong to expect realistic Phoenix Wright but I think they could have made things a bit more interesting so it could have stood with the other detective games that have come out.
Pic related is a game that people who didn't like L.A Noir might enjoy more.
