These aren't the biblical 4 horsemen. They're inspired by them, but Darksiders isn't bible fiction. The 4 Horsemen in Darksiders are the enforcers of the balance of good and evil. They're professional shit-kickers whose job it is to make sure angels and demons stay behind the lines.

Darksiders plot so far.

Long time ago Lillith slutted around with other races (angels or humans I forget) and created the nephilim. The nephilim, having no domain of their own, wage war on Eden, the promised land of humans. The charred Council, an eternal entity dead set on preserving the balance between all the races, sees them as a blight to the order of the universe and orders them executed. To do so, the charred Council recruits the four strongest Nephilim, gives them unimaginable power, and tasks them with killing their brethren. These four become the horsemen, who are basically just errand boys for the council, until the promised time or Armageddon, which is set to take place once humanity has advanced enough to compete against the angels and demons in a three-way war.

HOWEVER, One of the most powerful and influential angels, Abbadon, is coerced by Lillith in secret (who is secretly working for someone else as well, either Lucifer or Satan) to start Armageddon early. He steals the seals of the apocalypse, and with the aid of some conspirators, breaks all but one (the one that summons the horsemen). They leave this one unbroken, as to give them full tactical advantage over the humans, as well as having the advantage of a surprise attack on the demons. However, Abbadon is corrupted by Lillith, turning him into a demonic entity.

The charred Council, seeing this plot unfold, send War to Earth to partake in the first clash of the apocalypse. They then recall him, tell him he was too early, and punish him. This is all a ploy, as they believe the only way to get him to fight Abbadon is if he must do it to prove his innocence.

However, before War is sent on his mission to absolve himself, his older brother Death attempts to do so in his own way; by restoring the souls of humanity. To do so he goes to the tree of life, which is corrupted by an entity born of the hatred of his former brother, a nephilim. cont.

This rot is destroying worlds, using the tree of life (and death) as a portal between them. Death eventually defeats the rot, and saves the tree, well the well of souls is. Death is then offered the choice between the Nephilim and humanity. He has the souls of the Nephilim inside of him, and can either use them as a sacrifice to revive humanity, or use the humans to revive the nephilim. He chooses the former, sacrificing himself in the process, but restoring humanity.

Meanwhile, War has begun his quest to prove his own innocence, where he eventually discovers the conspiracies from both Abbadon and the council. Filled with rage, he vows to get vengeance on the council, and in the final moment of the game, breaks the final seal at last, officially starting Armageddon, and summoning the other three horsemen (this act revives Death, as well as unlocking their full power). This is where the plot leaves off.

So far we know that Lillith has influenced both Abbadon and Samael, and is working under an even higher demon. The Council has betrayed the horsemen, in order to preserve balance. This third game will likely add yet another trick of Lillith's, setting the stage for some ultimate confrontation against her, the council, and the devil himself in a final game (after DS4 happens with Strife, most likely)

it's been a long time since I played the game but from what I remember:

the Horsemen are only allowed to show up when all 7 seals of the apocalypse are broken. Since only 6 seals were broken, they weren't allowed to interfere.

The Council still wanted to fuck up Abaddon, but had no legitimate way to go after him since the last seal wasn't broken. So they sent War to earth and told him all the seals were broken since he was the most impulsive and boneheaded of the horsemen. Then they brought him back, and accused him of being the one who started the apocalypse early but gave him a chance to clear his name. It was all a ploy to give him a motivation to go after Abaddon

GOTY 2018 i'm hyped as fuck! 1 was kinda meh gameplaywise but story was good.
In 2 they really nailed the atmosphere, platforming sections and combat were fun,quite simple loot system (even tho i never fully catched on the upgrade mechanics as they were just for min-maxing weapon stats) was a good choice to implement. Soundtrack was solid - helped with building up atmosphere of locations, fights and puzzles. Boss fights were great especially Guardian boss and this dragon on the bridge. They said there will be backtracing which is fucking awesome considering their level design skills with many- not tedious to get to-new places to discover with new abilities acquired along journey.
D2 was one of my favourite games to which i went back like 3 times. D2>D1. If there will be plot like D1 and D2 music, mechanics, level/ loot/leveling design D3 will be easily somewhere in my top 10 games! Fuck i'm hyped! And they managed to use christian mythology in developing so fun to explore story i've never seen before in any media desu!

True, after it is revealed that Abaddon was colluding with demons, Uriel allies herself with Death, but implies that in the final battle she would still be his enemy I believe. Before the apocalypse it is implied she was on pretty neutral terms with the horsemen, as in DS2 she works with Death without hesitation. She only hated War because the council had told everyone that the apocalypse was his fault. Once that was disproved she helps him fight the real problem, then goes back to being neutral.
