Great atmosphere, fun combat even though most of what matters about combat is in the preparation, great soundtrack and an enjoyable story, even though it takes the backseat to everything else in the game. If you want a lot of what make Nocturne good but with a bigger focus on story you can play DDS, so i personally think DDS is one of the worst Megaten games. It's still good though.

Sounds like something out of Persona 4

Basically, it was the first mainline SMT game to come out in America/Europe and a good first introduction to the series for a lot of people. It had a excellent artstyle and one of the best soundtracks in the series, and the demon fusing was a lot of fun.

I bought it at launch and it is a damn good game. Very outdated if you played more recent SMT games, but still enjoyable.

For all the "what SMT do I play first?" questions in the thread, here's my vouch for Strange Journey.

Despite the name, it's the most grounded approach to SMT in the whole franchise. Every other game just takes the whole society coming to an end at the hands of demons thing way too well, the SNES games have fun stories but shit dungeons, whilst Nocturne is the philosophy major dropout of the game: fun to hang out with but you need to be able to tolerate bullshit.

In SJ you take a squad of professionals lead by Hal 9000 driving the Mako and fuck shit up. Characters feel natural, key themes from the series are explored well and each dungeon offers a new mechanic that keeps it fresh and provide a challenge without becoming tedious to overcome.
Despite the name, Strange Journey is the most normal feeling of the lot and is the best to jump into.

I played on hard from the start without knowing what the difficulty even changed.
Made the game fun, would recommend if you're playing on an emulator. Only part that really fucked me up because of hard settings was the tower that had random mobs who could spam instakill moves.

I downloaded this game and played it on an emulator. Got to the Amala Network before I deleted it because it was too boring.

Press Turn is a shit battle system. Why should critical hits be rewarded with MORE turns? It makes no sense, as critical hits ARE already a reward by themselves. Adding an extra reward to them is just inbalanced crap, especially when it's completely random.

Also I didn't like the MC. Too much teenager power fantasy. I don't find it believable that a teenager living a typical normie life can adapt so easily to a post-apocalyptic setting and act all badass around it.

Start with Devil Survivor. It feels more like a Persona game than any of the others. From there, either IV or Strange Journey. IVA is a sequel to IV, so only play it if you like IV.
