you don't need to buy an official hard drive, just the network adapter.
you can write an image to a normal IDE hard drive that makes it work in a PS2 and run homebrew.
open PS2 loader has pretty high compatibility and is a great way to play PS2 games.

You can use the hard drive to play backup iso games. I set mine up last year and don't regret it one bit.
