Where the hell does Nintendo take the franchise from here? 8D is pretty much the definitive Mario kart game, especially with the 4 more cups than what is standard.

What would Mario Kart 9 need to include to live up to this?

This is the most realistic, but also imo the worst direction for them to go.

Don't get me wrong, I'd rather have Kirby than Pink Gold Baby Peach Wearing A Party Hat, but once you start adding Nintendo characters, there is a weird obligation to base the stages around those characters. Mario Kart stages are something I always admired for being consistently unique and doesn't rely too much on existing concepts, but look at the DLC tracks in 8. Once villager and inklings were added, suddenly we have tracks like "Animal Crossing" etc.

Tl;dr, too many franchise characters adds pressure to have franchise based stages which is super boring compared to original ideas

Full gimmick mode. I don't know what it could be, but they would need to make m 9 the most gimmicky and different in the series to distract from the fact that it has considerably less content (assuming they go back to the standard number of cups).

Maybe bring back double dash mechanics, maybe deepen the kart customization with different engines, steering wheels, propellers, etc that drastically effect gameplay. Hell, maybe just straight up copy Diddy Kong Racing and add entire sky maps or water maps

After that they can go back to the standard gameplay with the same number of tracks we always got, and everyone will have forgotten about how spoiled we were with 8Delux's track list

Because donkey Kong characters is the pinnacle of rediculous mk roster choices. Funkey Kong in Wii was such a left field inclusion how could you not love it?

Instead of weird fun inclusions like that, or like the Bee lady in Mk7, we just get reskins.

Also I see what your image is going for, but there is a huge difference between reskins and sharing a skeleton. Using Funky as am example again, he's obviously an entirely different character than dk and is still fun to pick. Nobody wants to pick metal Mario because it's just a fucking silver mario

I think the director confirmed that the only reason Mario Kart 8 has other Nintendo characters is because they're DLC. So I doubt Nintendo Kart is going to be an actual thing in the future.

This is a deluxe version with all DLC added for free. I dont think you should be expecting the next game to be equivalent to this. Maybe to the base form of 8.

I expect the next game to ditch anti gravity and come up with a new twist to racing, but probably keep double items

Underwater and Gliding adds more possibilities for maps. Now you can make maps that go underwater/stay in the air long time. It's a direct upgrade from only driving on ground

Zero gravity on the other hand requires tracks to be designed around it. There is no direct benefit. More of a cute gimmick than upgrade

Have battle mode included from the get-go instead of needing a port to the next console solely for this and nothing else at all

Have all of the Mario characters anyone would want. By now there's no fucking reason why you can't just have ALL of the mario characters in one game. That way you don't need shitty fluff like Baby Rosalina or Pink Gold Peach. Stuff like ability suits or metal forms can be alternate costumes, then you could have that as its own set of unlockables.

Every Mario Kart track from the entire series. Again, it's a modern game, on a modern console, it should be able to handle it. Even by Nintendo's standards, this is assuming Mario Kart 9 comes out on whatever their next console will be.

More detailed Kart customization; customizing colors, paint style, change the horn, etc.

More complex battle modes, maybe some stuff like Capture the Flag or King of the Hill.

Bring back unique special items; diverse enough to give each character their own unique thing, but not so much that any one is the single best.

Besides that, I dunno. That's what I imagine to be the very upmost innovation they can do without changing the series as a whole.

There's a lot of potential for great tracks based on Kirby. You could have a track with 3 sections like Mt. Wario or Big Blue based on the Revenge of Meta Knight or one based on the mechanized Dreamland from Robobot.

Star Fox, Pikmin, Metroid and F-Zero would also have great optipns for tracks. Nintendo just went with the worst series, Animal Crossing, to do a DLC with.

This, it boggles my mind that they went so heavy with the fucking animal crossing crossover. Animal Crossing's relaxed, more subdued style doesn't mesh that well with Mario Kart but Kirby would've fit perfectly. Racing as Kirby and DeDeDe would kick ass, and there's tons of track potential.

It would take time to make animations for every single one. Part of the reason I suspect we have so many babies and metals is because they're so easy to make. This isn't the Gamecube/Wii era where Nintendo has a stockpile of models lying around.

Doubtful. Mario Kart Arcade GP 2 is pretty much the first game's "Mario Kart 8 Deluxe". Mario Kart Arcade GP switches around a few characters and karts, but the tracks are pretty much given a facelift to swap what they look like/which character they belong to and keep their overall layouts.

I can't imagine them building over 48 tracks from the ground up at launch for the next game. It's impossible to be anything but a step down in content. If vanilla 8 launched with a proper battle mode, it would have still beaten every Mario Kart to that point.

Yes it is. If I beat all the cups on 50cc while making my way up to mirror/200cc, and after I finish the game I want to go back and get 3 stars on the 50cc cups I may have gotten only 2 on, I should have the ability to do so.
