I think it has more to do with the overall pace of the game's combat and the enemy attacks. In Souls games there's a lot of bosses that can suddenly bust out 360 AoE attacks when you're in the middle of attacking them, and without being able to take advantage of the I-frames from rolls you'd be straight fucked. On one hand, yeah, it would force you to play more cautiously and be careful going in, but on the other hand it would turn a lot of fights into long games of hit and run because there's too much risk staying close for more than an attack or two.

Now onto actual discussion, the human battle portions were horrible and obviously not meaningful in a MH discussion. All it boiled down to was who could use the shitty controls to snipe somebody first. And as this anon said

FW honestly did it the second best out of all the clones I have played, (FW > Tokiden > GE > SS) but it's still nowhere near MH. Honestly the games are only surface level similar. Actually playing them MH has much more detail and polish in all of it's realms that just heavily separates it from the pack. It's not like I want it to be that way either. I hate playing MH on 3DS and buy every hunting game on other consoles or PC that feel better, they just are not as good so it always ends up defaulting to playing Portable Third on PPSSPP online.

Everyone here completely misses the point. Even in souls the enemies only react to your hits when they are getting staggered, but when they don't there is no on-hit animation. Code Vein will surely have a stagger animation for smaller enemies as it's an essential part of the souls combat design but it's natural that bigger enemies don't have that or that a few hit isn't enough to trigger it.

The problem in the trailer is really just that the swing animation with that sword doesn't look satisfying. Hopely they will improve on it.
