Pretty sure you still had your costumes, but yeah your gear was gone and it had a miniboss that depended fully on the [element] break skills (or items).

Still losing half your sp wasn't that bad if you maxed Rise and she restored a bit of your SP each fight and regularly used the elemental items you found in the dungeon.

In fairness, the first P4 anime is a solid companion to the game. Obviously you can't just watch the anime to get the full experience of playing the game, but it's not terrible.
