But yeah, the best kind of pixel art to me is the hand-placed stuff that keeps the color count as low as possible (you can have a lot of colors, but they all must serve a purpose and only be what you need). Pic very related uses 36 colors and can't be done by a computer. Pixeljoint's hall of fame and the weekly showcase have countless examples of well-done, hand-made pixel art.

Hand-made art is always going to be capable of more complex and creative pieces purely by virtue of the fact that it is hand-made. It's like that in any medium. The problem is that it doesn't apply to every situation. If there's a direct point light, then pillowshading is fine, but it should also have a highlight. If something is cylindrical, like that dude made, then it shouldn't be pillow-shaded (because the top shouldn't be shaded) because that conveys the wrong shape.

NxC had more going for it over PXZ 1&2, but honestly all three games think unit enforcement is the BEST idea EVER in a SRW lite game, where combat takes a good solid minute or two, and you tend to be unable to kill a unit the first turn you fight, and there; salready like 15+ units to kill off, and now there's another 30+ that just joined and....
I really liked NxC though given you could choose to ether use upgraded attacks, or use the previous versions, more less it's the only one with a direct Company Crossover tag team of Felicia and King, and those two worked so damn well together. These are really creepy and clearly rotoscoped. Not to say that rotoscoping is inherently bad, but it's not used very well in these instances. The head looks like a creepy mask and the body just moves in a very uncanny manner. If you want to see some slightly better sprite rotoscoping check out Elena's animations from 3rd strike. They're still weird at times but they look a lot better than these.

You should start with some tutorials. You're doing a lotta really amateur things that almost everybody does. The thing about shading that people don't understand is that it's not always necessary. Just putting it there to put it there is the wrong idea.
