Arrow kid learns all of the elements, but he has trouble learning fire and the first time he uses it burns the islander girl(black sibling girl, who turns out to be a water bender) so he's all shitty about it.

Scar kid was the bad guy before crazy bitch came in but thanks to his uncle he eventually goes to blue arrow kids side.

They come up with a plan to attack the big bad guy when he has no powers, it fails and he gets even more power then the blue arrow kid joins the invasion force and he stops evil guy from genociding the earth people and defeats him, taking away his powers and leaving him to rot in a dungeon for presumably the rest of his life.

Korra doesn't even come close to TLA, but people really exaggerate how bad it is.

Season 1 is pretty nice, though it has some plotholes and has some stupid shit for story purposes.
Season 2 is absolute dogshit, avoid at all costs. Just read a quick rundown of it to know what happened to get into season 3
Season 3 is actually pretty great. The villains are great.
Season 4 mostly suffers from the same problems as 1

Korra has it's moments, but people dislike it mostly because of 3 reasons:
1. The protagonist is just annoying
2. Love triangles that are focussed on too much. TLA had love stories and such, but didn't focus on it. In Korra it comes back all the damn time
3. Some plot holes and lore fucks. Things like the electricity-bending being common all of the sudden, while it was an extremely rare and dangerous-to-learn technique in TLA.

I'd recommend watching season 1 and 3 and skipping the rest

Anyone else get really interested in the concept of bender's of one element using the techniques and methodology of a different element? And subsequently disappointed when they never really followed up on it at all?

I felt like it was such a waste to not explore that avenue even though they kept touching on the idea. Like how the firebending method for diverting lightning uses a waterbending technique of redirection. Or how earthbenders could do watery stuff with mud and waterbenders could do earthlike techniques with ice. The whole concept of strengthening firebending from the lungs, controlling air and using it to make fire.

How Air is supposed to be the opposite of earth, and Ang's style was very tai-chi and never used direct blows, while his son Tenzin's style looked like a mix of earth and firebending with heavy swings and lots of strong blasts in straight lines.

The constantly hinted at it, but they never really dug into it like I thought they would. It seems obvious to have a character with one element raised by benders of a different element. Like Firebender who grew up with water benders or some other permutation.

Am I the only one who wanted something like that? The whole "probending as orthodox boxing" allegory was obvious and interesting but didn't really satisfy.

That moment wasn't really showing the superiority of Airbending so much as the brutality of it's user, or at least, it's the first time we've seen airbending used so viciously. Up until then Airbending was always shown as so much softer than every other style, not necessarily weaker, but it had this "air" of passivity to it, like it's was rubber bullets and everyone else was shooting slugs.

I don't think anyone really thinks that it means airbending is the strongest, it was just a way of showing that the style is secondary to the person using it, and so even the relatively gentle style of airbending could be used for vicious ass murder if used by a vicious ass murderer.

That's why that scene was framed very clearly as an execution, not a battle. She was completely helpless and he executed her with his power, in a pretty slow and inefficient manner at that. Like, earth benders can crush you to death, metalbenders could stab the shit out of you, waterbenders can do all sorts of fucked up shit up to and including bloodbending which is ALWAYS depicted in a really horrific manner and it's pretty obvious that firebending is the murder king style (even though in screen it's pretty much just spicy airbending and nobody actually gets burned).

If anything the scene that shouts AIRBENDING STRONK is when the "special style" of airbending is fucking flight, like straight up superman level control flight.

In contrast water can be used to bludgeon, drown, slash, stab etc. Pretty sure an ice spike through the heart or a slashed throat would kill you before suffocation, even if you could pull off the technique in the heat of battle.

Sozin's Comet doesn't make sense in the first place, it's just a plot device. Real comets are big balls of dust and ice that burn up in the atmosphere. Realistically they should enhance airbending and waterbending powers as well in that case if you're going by "big mass of x element being closer to you = your bending gets stronger".

The problem being that the heat is what the Firebenders rely on, which they could really harness thanks to the Comet's presence.
Waterbenders rely on the Moon for power, and water itself doesn't affect power levels, it's just ammunition for their craft. All the Comet would do for them is let them move some Ice around if they could magically get close enough to the Comet to manipulate it.
