So if Shovel Knight has proven anything it's that crowdfunded games can be successful. So why is it that no other has been? Are there any hidden gems worth mentioning that managed to be good? Or is Shovel Knight the only diamond in the rough?
Divinity: Original Sin was crowdfunded I think, so wasUndertale
>>375687587
Never heard of Divinity, and somehow I forgot Undertale exists.
>>375687379
Volgarr the Viking
>>375687379
Poacher was a great game, but nobody even heard of it.
Shovel Knight is basic as fuck. A majority of other projects are over ambitious
>>375687964
Yeah but don't you think that's why it's good? It's not trying to be some avante garde, next level patrician art game, it's just a fun platformer.
FTL was extremely successful and a much better game than shovel knight
FTL came out before it dummy.
>>375688167
Likewise with Darkest Dungeon
>>375688063
I didn't find it that great. It played it incredibly safe by just copying what established old school platformers did well and putting it into one game while cutting out the shit people didn't like (difficulty).
Apparently that's enough for you faggots to call it one of the best indie games ever.
>>375687379
>no other has been
Divinity Original Sin
Undermeme
Pillars of Eternity
Banner Sagaeven though the second one tanked because of nonexistant advertising
Sunless Sea
FTL
Darkest Dungeon
probably some others that I'm forgetting/unaware of. Nothing that's as much of a runaway success as Shovel Knight, but successes nonetheless
Aerannis was a pretty OK one. Reviews were a bit harsh because the story is weird and pissed some people off and controls can be kind of wonky at times.
Overall, it was a neat Megaman ZX-like game with some stealth stuff and a psychedelic scifi theme thrown in.
The first hour is fairly slow though and it feels pretty basic, but after that point, the style shines through and you can feel more immersed in the world.
You know exactly what's behind the spoiler, so you can only be mad at yourself if you click on it
And I'm going on the word 'successful', not subjective opinions

>You know exactly what's behind the spoiler
>no spoiler
MOM'S GONNA FREAK
>>375688404Stop shilling your own game dude.
I really enjoyed the demo that was put out. That shit was like 2 hours long. I've been meaning to buy it but I forgot the name of the game. It's not very memorable.
>>375687379
>So why is it that no other has been?
Just like any other place involved in production, 99% of things suck ass and 1% of things actually come through. Whether it's crowdfunded or it's picked up by some big production studio or some guy spends a decade doing it alone in his garage for nothing, how they make a living while creating it doesn't matter.
The only thing that matters is if the team is skilled enough to make the thing they set out to create.

Chivalry Medieval Warfare sought crowd funding

>>375687862
Honestly a very well made game. I'm having a ton of fun with it right now.
It's rare when /v/ recommends me an actually good game
>>375687379
SHOVEL KNIGHT
>Owners: 454,360 ± 18,733
UNDERTALE
>Owners: 2,486,844 ± 43,713
Why cite Shovel Knight when Undertale is a far more successful and much more critically acclaimed?
>>375688536
Not shilling. I remembered seeing something about the Kickstarter a while back then forgot about it. I came across it during this past winter sale and tried it. It was decent.
Conquistadors
Came across this a month ago. Decent challenge. I think this style of game is kinda over though.

>>375688968
Does that include sales across all platforms?
Grim Dawn and Slime Rancher are solid. Very opposite sides of the gameplay spectrum. Both involve farming I suppose.I have no idea if Bastard Bonds was crowdfunded but I loved it.
>>375687707
Divinity OS is pretty good, top down RPG with good combat, the second one is in beta with regular updates, but it only lets you play the first area right now
Definitely try the first one
>>375688968
Shovel Knight is on literally every platform possible except mobile
>>375687379
Mordhau.Check back in three months
>>375688968
Because Undertale being a crowdfunded game isn't a very well known fact
>>375687876
My blackest of all niggers.
>>375689210
>>375689294
You're right, that's only Steam sales. My mistake.

>>375690406
you are just too precious
>>375688292
Because you make that process sound so simple.
People also like them because they're making top quality dlc for free
>>375689969
They've literally almost finished their stretch goals?
Are you perchance retarded?
>>375690563
Wasting time making a basic game doesn't demand any praise.
>>375690714
Apparently it does, because people praise it.
Are you mad?
>>375690768
stop responding to him
>>375690768
The industry is filled with casual shits. Who knew.
>>375688968
also undertale is cheaper than shovel knight undertale was 10 and shovel knight was fifteen at the time of release
Momodora: Reverie Under the Moonlight was crowdfunded I think, and that was fucking great (if a bit short)
