For Puyo, how important is it to memorize patterns? I hear about how GTR or whatever is important to start with, but a lot of players I see in videos have different beginnings to their chains.

I saw someone post this here before, but the best way to describe it is this

low level Tetris play > low level Puyo play
medium level Puyo > medium level Tetris
high level Tetris > high level Puyo

As long as you're playing Tetris the "normal" way by going after only Tetrises, you'll get your ass kicked by anyone who knows how to set up and get off solid Puyo chains, no matter how fast you're dropping Tetriminos and clearing lines.

From what (little) I've seen of higher level Puyo vs Tetris play, it seems that Puyo players have to use special vertically-oriented build patterns in order to have much hope against Tetris players who can move that quickly. By having all of their chain set up in a tall vertical column using only the first third or so of the board, they minimize the damage done by garbage and can still potentially get their chain off by placing the trigger really high up.

Now the question would be which would be more overpowering between Tetris and Panel de Pon. Dr. Mario and Columns would be splatted quickly due to now slow they work and how easy it is to fuck over a Columns player with harassment jewels.
